Abstract: Alkylphenols are nitrated with nitric acid in the presence of a secondary or tertiary alcohol, a secondary alkyl nitrate, an aldehyde or a ketone. Use of such inhibitor decreases the quantity of oxidation products formed, especially quinone formation, and increases the conversion of the starting phenols to the desired nitrated products.
