Abstract: An optical device has an optical modulator element and an optical receiver element. The optical modulator element includes a first optical waveguide extending to a first end face, a first inter-element waveguide extending to a second end face, and an optical modulator including an electro-optic material. The optical receiver element includes a second optical waveguide extending to a third end face, a second inter-element waveguide extending to a fourth end face, an optical receiver, and a polarization element. In the optical device, the first inter-element waveguide and the second inter-element waveguide have been connected to each other by being butted against each other.

Abstract: An optical modulator includes an electro-optic layer including an electro-optic material, and a material layer arranged below the electro-optic layer and having a dielectric constant lower than a dielectric constant of the electro-optic layer. The optical modulator includes a core layer arranged below the material layer and having a refractive index higher than refractive indices of the electro-optic layer and the material layer, and an electrode that applies an electric signal to the electro-optic layer. The refractive index of the material layer is 0.85 times the refractive index of the electro-optic layer or higher.

Abstract: An optical device includes an optical element and an optical fiber block. The optical element includes an optical waveguide, a first end face on which an end face of the optical waveguide is disposed, and a second end face protruding from the first end face. The optical fiber block includes an optical fiber, a third end face on which an end face of the optical fiber is disposed, and a fourth end face recessed from the third end face. In the optical device, in a state where the second end face and the fourth end face are fixed so as to be in contact with each other, the first end face and the third end face are connected by butt coupling to optically couple the end face of the optical waveguide and the end face of the optical fiber.
