Abstract: A submerged rotating shaft mechanism, including a gearbox with a gland connected to it and a shaft projecting from the gearbox through and beyond the gland, has an inner seal adjacent the gearbox, an outer, labyrinth, seal adjacent an outer end of the gland, the inner and outer seals forming, with the inside of the gland and the outside of the shaft, a chamber, a fitting communicates, through the gland, with the chamber, and compressed air is supplied to the chamber through the fitting to provide a constant flow of air through the labyrinth seal to flush that seal.
