Abstract: 390,776. Controlling apparatus by light. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.- (Assignees of Prince, D. C. ; 150, Guernsey Road, Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) Nov. 28, 1932, No. 33668. Convention date, Nov. 30, 1931. [Class 40 (v).] The temperature of a heated device which also emits light, e.g. an electric furnace, is controlled by directing the light alternately with a standard light, on to a light-sensitive device which operates control means for the heated device. A furnace 10 is heated by a resistor 11 connected through the coils 12, 13 of a saturable core reactor 14 to an alternating current supply 15, 16. The reactor is also provided with a coil 17 connected through transformer 37 to the anode 20 of a thermionic valve 18 preferably of the mercury vapour type. A battery 21 is connected through transformer 25 to the grid 19 so that normally it is sufficiently negative to prevent the passage of current. A light-sensitive device 22 is connected through a battery 23 and transformer 25. A mirror 29 driven by a synchronous motor 33 receives light alternately from the furnace and from a standard light 27 and directs it on to the device 22, each event occurring during one half of the cycle of the anode voltage of the valve 18. When the light emission of the furnace corresponds to the predetermined temperature, a reversal of the phase of the grid voltage with respect to the anode voltage occurs, the valve is rendered non-conducting, the saturation of the reactor 14 disappears, and current flow through the resistor 11 is prevented.
