Abstract:
A cast cylinder block for an internal combustion engine includes a first and a second cylinder bore and a shared bore wall. The first cylinder bore includes a first bore wall and the second cylinder bore includes a second bore wall. The shared cylinder bore wall includes a first portion and a second portion. A portion of the first bore wall combines with a portion of the second bore wall to form the shared cylinder bore wall. The first portion of the shared bore wall is an as-cast portion. The second portion of the shared bore wall is a metal matrix composite.
Abstract:
A high pressure die casting apparatus for forming metal components includes a die cast mold, a shot sleeve, and a plunger. The shot sleeve includes a pivotable pouring lid disposed in an inlet of the shot sleeve. The pouring lid is disposed in at least one of a closed position and an open position while having a pouring profile shape for promoting smooth non turbulent flow of liquid metal from a pouring ladle to the shot sleeve.

A number of variations may include at least one mold portion that may define a first cavity, a circular gating system, and at least one sprue. The circular gating system may surround the first cavity and define a continuous in-gate from the circular gating to the first cavity. The at least one sprue and at least one vent may be in fluid communication with the circular gating system and the first cavity.
