Abstract:
The apparatus comprises a frame and a carriage mounted slidably on the frame. The frame has a work support part and the carriage is equipped with a fastener, the threaded end of which extends through a hole in the work support part. A jack is situated between one member attached to the frame and another on the carriage. Extension of the jack moves the carriage on the frame to retract the fastener part way into the hole in the work support part. Tension springs, connected between a part attached to the frame and another on the carriage serve to restore the carriage to its at rest position relative to the frame when the jack is not extended. A flywheel is mounted on a shaft which engages the head of the fastener. In use a RIVNUT (TM) is threaded onto the fastener, the shank of the RIVNUT (TM) is inserted through a hole in the work (or the work part is placed onto the RIVNUT (TM)), the jack is extended to collapse the RIVNUT (TM) shank and thus install the RIVNUT (TM) and the flywheel is spun to withdraw the fastener from the RIVNUT (TM).

In the subject apparatus the user lies, back down, on a shuttle platform which is mounted on parallel tracks and movable from end to end of the tracks. The shuttle is biased toward a position between the ends by primary and secondary energy storage and release apparatuses.The engagement of the shuttle and track assembly by the primary energy storage and release apparatus is constant. The secondary energy storage and release apparatus is constantly engaged with the shuttle and intermittently engaged with the track assembly. Both apparatuses are adjustable in terms of the at rest position of the shuttle on the track assembly and the forces in the apparatuses when at rest and in operation.Hand grips are attached to the track assembly by cables and are used by the user for setting the platform into oscillating motion on the track. The acceleration forces achieved may be in excess of the force of gravity and the shuttle is equipped with supports and restraints for stabilizing the position of the user on the shuttle. The exercise provides cardiovascular stimulation, passive exercise of all components of the body and the active exercise of setting the shuttle in motion and maintaining the motion.

A centrifuge and method of operating it, wherein a patient sample tube is first spun while non-aligned with the centrifugal force to make use of the Boycott effect, and then while aligned with the centrifugal force to allow any gel present between the separated phases to properly seal. A latch is used to hold it in the non-aligned position until the latch is opened.

The subject apparatus comprises straps which conform snugly to the user's shoulders to limit headward motion of the user in a direction essentially parallel to the user's spine and support structure with which the user's back is in contact. One end of each strap is attached to the support structure essentially at the point of tangency of the user's shoulder with the support structure. The other end of each strap is pivotally connected to one end of one of a pair of structural arms the other ends of which are pivotally connected to the support structure some distance in the headward direction from the points of attachment of the straps to the structure. When the apparatus is engaged by a user the straps wrap around the user's shoulders from back to front and the arms are at an acute angle to the support surface with one of their ends near the front portions of the user's shoulders and the other ends at their points of attachment to the support structure. With this configuration the apparatus conforms to a variety of sizes and shapes of shoulders without adjustment and use requires no buckling or unbuckling.

The platform is biased toward a position essentially midway between the ends by primary and secondary energy storage and release apparatuses. The secondary apparatus is engaged by the platform after it has moved partway toward one end or the other. Both apparatuses are adjustable in terms of spring rates and storage capacities. The engagement points of the platform with the secondary apparatus are adjustable. Hand grips are attached to the track assembly by cables and are used by the user for setting the platform into oscillating motion on the track. A footrest is also attached to the track assembly so that the user can set the platform into motion by applying foot pressure with either or both feet in combination, if desired, with force exerted by either or both hands. The acceleration forces achievable are in excess of the force of gravity and the platform is equipped with supports and stops for stabilizing the position of the user on the platform. The exercise provides cardiovascular stimulation, passive exercise of all components of the body and the active exercise of setting the platform in motion and maintaining the motion.

A therapeutic exercise machine particularly adapted for restoring and/or maintaining the range of motion for post operative patients and for general therapeutic use. There is a carriage assembly mounted for back and forth longitudinal motion along a support frame. A plurality of tensioning cords urge the carriage frame to a forward location, and there is a contact plate mounted to the carriage frame. The person using the machine presses his or her feet or hands against the contact plate and moves it back and forth against the force of the tensioning cords. The tensioning cords are arranged so that there is an operating end that can be selectively attached to the front of the frame or to the carriage frame to vary the magnitude of the tensioning force.

The exercise apparatus comprises a track assembly, a carriage movable on the track assembly and a kickplate assembly attached to the track assembly. The carriage is resiliently restrained to move toward one end of the track assembly. The kickplate assembly can be adjusted to be anywhere along the track assembly and the position of the kickplate on the kickplate assembly can be adjusted to vary its distance above the track assembly.

The apparatus comprises a carriage supported on a track assembly by rollers. Energy absorption and release apparatus biases the carriage toward an at-rest position approximately midway between the ends of the track assembly. The user lies back-down on the carriage and, using handles and a foot rest provided for the purpose, sets the carriage into reciprocating motion. The effort used in causing the motion and the acceleration forces experienced as a result of it provide effects beneficial to the user's voluntary muscles, skeletal muscles and internal organs. The energy absorption and release apparatus comprises primary and secondary apparatuses. The forces and energy levels involved in the operation of both the primary and secondary apparatuses is adjustable while the apparatus is in use, the secondary apparatus being adjustable by the user. The adjustments are effected by manual engagement and disengagement of units of sets of bungee apparatus incorporated in the primary and secondary energy storage and release apparatuses.
