Abstract: Methods of reducing the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the Earth's atmosphere during coating operations are provided, as well as a coating composition comprising a carrier and one or more fluorocopolymers. The carrier comprises VOC compounds and the one or more fluorocopolymers is produced by copolymerization of (1) a first monomer selected from the group consisting of hydrofluoroalkenes, (2) a second monomer comprising vinyl ester(s), and (3) a third monomer comprising vinyl ether(s), wherein at least a portion of the vinyl ether monomer is a hydroxyl group-containing vinyl ether, and wherein the one or more fluorocopolymers comprise at least about 70% by weight of the coating composition and the VOC portion of the carrier is not greater than about 30% by weight of the coating composition.

The resulting copolymer is environmentally friendly, has favorable molecular weight characteristics, and may be shipped economically in high concentration.

Abstract: Poly fluorine-containing siloxane coatings having improved hydrophobic and oleophobic properties and solutions for creating such coatings are provided. In some embodiments, the coating includes a polymer having a plurality of Si—O—Si linkages; and at least two fluorine-containing moieties, each attached to at least one of the Si—O—Si linkages. Each fluorine-containing moiety independently includes a linking portion attached to a silicon of one of the Si—O—Si linkages, wherein the linking portion is of a formula selected from the group consisting of: —[CH2]a— where a is an integer from 1 to 10 and —[CH2]bCONH[CH2]c— where b and c are independently an integer from 0 to 10. Each fluorine-containing moiety also independently includes a fluorinated portion attached to the linking portion, wherein the fluorinated portion is selected from a fluorinated-alkyl group having 1-10 carbon atoms and a perfluoro-ether containing organic group.
