1,160,666. Polythioethers. INVENTA A.G. FUR FORSCHUNG UND PATENTVERWERTUNG, ZURICH. 4 June, 1968 [9 June, 1967], No. 26484/68. Heading C3R. Polythioethers containing units of formula where R and R 1 are aromatic radicals, are obtained by reacting an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of an aromatic dithiol with an aromatic dihalogen compound having at least three carbon atoms between the halogen atoms, the aromatic radical being free from electronattracting groups in o- or p-positions with respect to the halogen atoms, in a polar solvent at elevated temperature. In examples, polymers are obtained by heating potassium, lithium and sodium salts of diphenyl ether 4,41- dithiol with p-dibromo-benzene, p-dichlorobenzene and 4,4 1 -dibromodiphenyl ether, in N-methylpyrrolidone. Other salts mentioned are those of diphenyl sulphide dithiol, diphenylmethane dithiol and 4,4 1 -dimercaptodiphenyl, and other dihalogen compounds are 1,3- dibromo - benzene, 1,4 - dichloronaphthalene, 4 - chloro - 4 1 - bromodiphenyl, 4,41 - diiododiphenyl - methane and 4,41 - dichlorodiphenyl sulphide. A catalyst, e.g. copper, copper oxides, copper salts, N-bromosuccinimide or N-bromo-phthalimide, may be present in the reaction.
