Abstract: Various principles and methods are described herein to improve wireless communication in a user computing device. Certain aspects of the disclosure describe management of wireless transmissions relative to various regulations related to a specific absorption rate. Other aspects of the disclosure relate to detection of user proximity to a transmitting antenna. Other aspects relate to alternative strategies to improve wireless communication, such as selection of alternate antennas or baseband modems, or changes in device orientation.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are devices, methods, and systems for adjusting transmit properties based on compliance metrics for human exposure to radiation. As one example, the system determines a first transmission power limit associated with transmissions on a first radio resource, wherein the first transmission power limit is based on a first compliance level threshold of human exposure to emitted radiation when using the first radio resource. The system determines a second transmission power limit associated with transmissions on a second radio resource, wherein the second transmission power limit is based on a second compliance level threshold of human exposure to emitted radiation when transmitting using the second radio resource. The system also controls a wireless device to select either the first radio resource or the second radio resource for a transmission from the wireless device based on the first transmission power limit and the second transmission power limit.

Abstract: Devices with radiating antennas are subject to various regulations designed to limit the absorption of radiofrequency energy in a human body part in close proximity to a radiating antenna. Various conventional strategies are available for management of transmissions to comply with these regulations; however, each of these conventional strategies has drawbacks, such as a negative effect on the wireless link. Various strategies are disclosed herein to comply with the requisite regulations while maintaining the wireless link. In addition, strategies are presented to select wireless link rates, taking into account limitations that may be in place to satisfy the necessary regulations.
