Abstract: A plasma panel arrangement for storing, displaying and selectively shifting information from one place therein to another includes a panel filled with an illuminable gas, and horizontal and vertical parallel conductor arrays disposed on opposite sides of the panel, the coordinate intersections of the conductors defining gaseous discharge cells. The vertical conductors are sequentially driven by a multi-phase drive system, and the panel includes a plurality of data lines for entering information. The data as entered is sequentially shifted left or right in a horizontal direction in a single line display. In a multi-row display, the system provides left or right shifting of one character row while holding the display of the other character rows. The instant invention makes the plasma shift technology competitive in speed to X-Y matrix addressed panels, but at a much reduced circuit cost.

Abstract: The color filters required for a thin film transistor liquid crystal display device are provided by using polychromatic glass for either the front or rear glass panel of the device. Through a series of masking, ultraviolet exposure and heat treating steps, red, green, and blue color areas can be generated in the polychromatic glass. Each of the different colored areas is, of course, to be aligned with one of the individually-addressable pel electrodes in the device. Two embodiments are described. In the first, the polychromatic glass forms the rear glass panel of the device and serves as a substrate for the thin film transistors used to individually address pel electrodes. In an alternate embodiment, the front glass panel of device is treated to form the color filter regions.

Abstract: A plasma display panel has twin X and twin Y orthogonal drive lines in place of the single X and single Y drive lines of prior art panels. Each pair of twin drive lines are in close proximity and spaced a relatively much greater distance from the next pair. The dielectric layer covering the drive lines is sufficiently thick to cause the voltage potentials on the twin drive lines to image as one potential on the surface of the dielectric. Each one of the twin drive lines is connected to a selection line such that the raising of any two X selection lines and two Y selection lines produces a write-erase potential on a particular gas cell.

Abstract: Decal technology is employed to provide a color filter layer for a thin film transistor liquid crystal display device. The red/green/blue color regions and an opaque surround are printed on a suitable substrate using gravure printing techniques and colored glass frit materials. Once the printed decal is transferred to one of the glass panels, it can be heated to fuse it to the glass. Electrodes can be deposited directly on this fused color filter layer.

Abstract: In a plasma display panel consisting of gas enclosed between adjacent insulating members having conductors thereon insulated from the gas, a light source in the panel is used to condition all cells to permit selected orthogonal conductors to constitute a display. The light source is actuated prior to a write operation by a high frequency signal whereby all areas of the panel are simultaneously conditioned. The light source may comprise one or more pilot cells positioned adjacent to but not within the display areas. By conditioning all cells simultaneously, higher speed and uniform selection operation is effected.
