Abstract: Improved metallized films are produced by transferring a protective layer onto a metal layer from the side of the film remote from the metal layer. The transfer preferably takes place in the metallizer shortly after metallization and before the metal layer is exposed to the atmosphere which reduces the tendency of the metal to oxidize leading to a purer metal layer with enhanced barrier properties.
