    Abstract: Apparatus for reducing to particles tread portions and beaded side wall portions of vehicle tires, particularly extra large vehicle tires, or for preparing such vehicle tires for recapping, comprises a tire holder assembly, having a paired set of dual jacks carried by opposite ends, respectively, of elongate, rigid, tire clamping frames, and a rotary, cutter blade assembly made up of a side-by-side series of disks carrying cutter blades of chisel type offset from one another to provide a helically oriented series of such cutting blades. Opposite side and end members of each of the frames provide for clamping corresponding side wall beads of a received tire, while opposite ends of opposite end members of the respective frames, usually clamping corners thereof, span respective chords of the circumferences of corresponding beads of the tire. When the tire is to be recapped, arcuate attachments are secured to the mutually spaced, opposite, clamping corners of the ends of the frames that contact a corresponding tire bead. An optional but important feature of the invention is the progressive cutting of the tire in a cryogenic atmosphere which freezes exposed surfaces of the tire, and the mounting of a group of separate, residual, beaded side wall portions of sequentially cut tires in the tire holder assembly of the same apparatus for cutting such side wall portions down to the heavily reinforced beads thereof.

    Abstract: A shredder comprising a rotor and stationary structure. The rotor includes a shaft provided with a series of grooves and split blades mounted within said grooves, this by attachment means penetrating the shaft.     Abstract: A machine, a method, and an air-cooled cutting brush for removing tread material for recycling from used motor vehicle tires prior to scrapping or retreading without damaging the tire cords and beads. The tread material is removed as fine particles, or buffings, ready for recycling without subsequent sorting out of cloth or metal. A tire is mounted in an upright position on a tire receiving assembly which expands to grip the tire beads. The tire receiving assembly is mounted on a supporting structure which pivots. An elongate, powered, rotating, cutting brush is mounted on a rolling mounting structure which moves the cutting brush into and out of engagement with the tread on the outer, ground-contacting portion and on the sidewalls of a tire. In operation, the tire is rotated as the cutting brush engages the tread material of the ground-contacting portion, the supporting structure is then pivoted to remove the tread material of one sidewall, and repeated on the opposite sidewall. The cutting brush is maintained at a temperature below the melting point of the tread material by radially-extending bristles that are twisted and crimped along their length to allow bristles to abut or engage other bristles and allow air circulation between the bristles and to provide even cutting. The machine can be mounted on a tractor-trailer rig for mobile operation, the cutting brush being powered by an internal combustion engine with the tractor having retractable stabilizer arms and a crane to lift tires. A retractable screw auger deposits removed tread material into a container beside the trailer.
