An image forming apparatus that is an authenticating apparatus includes an authentication-processing unit, a display area, a display-control unit and a re-entry-processing unit. The authentication-processing unit executes user authentication by comparing an entered password with a set password. The display area displays an entire entered password so as to be visible when non-matching characters are included in the entered password. The display-control unit causes a re-entry screen on which an input field is arranged in which correction characters are entered to be displayed. The re-entry-processing unit corrects the non-matching characters of the entered password based on correction characters that are entered in the input field. The authentication-processing unit compares the entered password that is corrected by the re-entry-processing unit with the set password.

The display section displays a message to a user. The controller controls operation of the display section. In causing the display section to display a remaining amount display icon indicating a remaining amount display bar with a length that represents a remaining amount of a consumable used in the image forming section, the controller causes the display section to display in an enlarged size the remaining amount display icon indicating the remaining amount display bar with a length corresponding to a maximum remaining amount and continuously changes the length of the remaining amount display bar from the length corresponding to the maximum remaining amount to a length corresponding to a current remaining amount.

Provided is an authenticating device that reduces entry mistakes when entering a password due to touch mistakes in a state in which security is maintained. An image forming apparatus includes a touch panel, an authentication-processing unit, and a touch-mistake-detection unit. The touch panel displays a software keyboard on which plural input keys that indicate characters, numbers and symbols are arranged, and receives touch operations of input keys that correspond to touch positions on a display screen that displays the software keyboard. The authentication-processing unit executes user authentication by comparing an entered password that is entered by the touch panel and a set password. When the comparison result indicates there is no match, the touch-mistake-detection unit detects a touch mistake in the entered password. When a touch mistake is detected, the authentication-processing unit authenticates the entered password as the set password being entered.
