Abstract: INTERPOLYMERS (ESPECIALLY COPOLYMERS) OF ETHYLENE AND PROPYLENE ARE OXIDIZED AND DEGRADED BY HEATING ABOVE 100* C. WITH AN OXYGEN-CONTAINING GAS, USUALLY AIR, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN ALIPHATIC AMINE. THE DEGRADED POLYMERS ARE CHARACTERIZED BY CAUSING SUBSTANTIALLY NO INCREASE IN THE LOW-TEMPERATURE FLUIDITY OF A FUEL OIL, AND ARE USEFUL AS VISCOSITY MODIFIERS FOR LUBRICANTS.
