    Abstract: A communication system is disclosed in which minimum system information associated with a cell of a radio access network (RAN) is transmitted by a base station. The minimum system information comprises parameters for accessing a cell of the base station, divided into an initial part and a remaining part of the minimum system information. The base station transmits the initial part of the system information via a broadcast channel using a first set of communication resources; transmits information identifying an allocation of at least one further communication resource in a shared channel; and transmits the remaining part of the minimum system information using the at least one further communication resource identified by the allocation.

    Abstract: A communications node operable to communicate with another communications node over a communications channel having a plurality of frequency resources, the communications node includes data defining a division of the communications channel into a plurality of contiguous sub-bands each having N frequency resources, wherein each frequency resource in a sub-band has a corresponding frequency resource in each of the other sub-bands, data defining an initial allocation of the frequency resources, a resource determination module operable to apply a frequency shift to the initially allocated frequency resources in accordance with a frequency hopping sequence to determine frequency resources to use for communicating information with the other communications node, wherein the frequency shift applied moves the initially allocated frequency resources to corresponding frequency resources in another sub-band, a transceiver for communicating information with the other communications node using the determined frequency resource.

    Abstract: A communication system is disclosed in which a base station communicates with user equipment via an associated cell having a system bandwidth. The system bandwidth comprises a bandwidth part having a set of contiguous physical resource blocks. The base station initiates a random access procedure with the user equipment; provides first information identifying a set of frequency resources for an uplink channel; and provides second information identifying at least one specific frequency resource, within said set of frequency resources, for said uplink communication.     Abstract: A communication system is disclosed in which a communications node allocates resources for potential use by any of a plurality of user communication devices, including first type (e.g. legacy) user communication devices and second type (e.g. machine-type) communication devices. The control data includes information identifying a first PRACH resource configuration for a first type user communication device and a second PRACH resource configuration for a second type of device such that the user devices can be distinguished by the PRACH configuration used.
