Abstract: A process for the production of a nitroalkane or dinitroalkane by reacting an olefin or diolefin with nitric acid in the presence of a lower aliphatic monocarboxylic acid anhydride, thereby producing a nitro-ester or dinitro-ester, and reducing the nitro-ester or dinitro-ester with an alkali borohydride to produce the nitroalkane or dinitroalkane.
