Abstract: A light-emitting phosphor display device having a high contrast ratio is provided having a light-absorbing dielectric layer on the side of the phosphor layer opposite the viewing side to absorb the incident ambient light. Polycrystalline layers with matching refractive indices are selected for the phosphor and light-abosrbing dielectric layers to reduce interface reflectance, light scattering and halation.
