Abstract: An elongated porous member is impregnated with a combustible fluid and then floated in a generally upright position in a layer of combustible fluid on a body of water, with the lower portion of the porous member extending down in the water and with its upper portion projecting above the fluid layer. The fluid carried by the upper end of the porous member is ignited to produce a flame that is thereafter fed by combustible fluid moving up through that member by capillary action from the fluid layer, whereby to remove the fluid from the water and burn it.
