Abstract: 1,198,097. Gelatinized oxidized starch; cement compositions. A. E. STALEY MFG. CO. 14 July, 1967 [1 Aug., 1966], No. 32547/67. Headings C3H and C3U. A starch contains at least 0À1% of carboxyl groups (dry weight basis) and consists of from 51-75% by wt. of gelatinized oxidized starch and 25-49% by wt. of ungelatinized oxidized starch. It may be made by oxidation, e.g. with NaOCl, followed by gelatinization, e.g. by working in an extruder with water as plasticizer (others listed) at 150-160‹ C. at 500-12,000 p.s.i. A cement composition contains a major proportion of an inert inorganic filler and, as binder, a minor proportion of the above starch. As filler a mixture of asbestos, mica, limestone, clay and silica is exemplified. From 40-200 parts of water may be added per 100 parts of dry mixture to make the cement. In comparative examples the binder is non-gelatinized, acidmodified or unmodified starch; hydroxypropyl, hydroxyethyl, carboxyethyl, cyanoethyl, amino or ammonium alkyl starch; or casein.
