Abstract: Phenylindane carboxylic acids are purified by low concentration permanganate treatment at pH upward from 10 and carbon treatment to remove at least manganous ions. The process is particularly useful for the purification of phenylindane dicarboxylic acids that are to be converted to the beta hydroxy alkyl esters from which corresponding film and fiber forming polyesters are made.
