Abstract: This invention provides a method for detecting an analyte in a sample, including a step of contacting said analyte with a nanoparticle to facilitate binding thereto, wherein the nanoparticle comprises: (i) a core; (ii) pores extending radially from said core and being defined by spaces between an array of dendritic spikes radiating outwardly from a surface of the core, wherein the pores have an average pore size of between about 10 nm and about 20 nm; (iii) a binding agent for binding the analyte; and (iv) a detection agent immobilized within said pores; to thereby detect said analyte. This invention also provides kits, compositions and products comprising said nanoparticle.

Abstract: Particulate material comprising rough mesoporous hollow nanoparticles. The rough mesoporous hollow nanoparticles may comprise a mesoporous shell, the external surface of which has projections thereon, the projections having smaller sizes than the particle size. The particulate material may be used to deliver active agents, such as insecticides and pesticides. The active agents can enter into the hollow core of the particles and be protected from degradation by sunlight. The rough surface of the particles retains the particles on plant leaves or animal hair. Methods for forming the particles are also described. Carbon particles and methods for forming carbon particles are also described.

Abstract: The invention relates, in part, to a method of producing silica vesicles including under controlled conditions to thereby heavily influence the morphology and characteristics of the vesicles. The vesicles are shown to be effective as delivery agents for chemical and biological agents. They are also shown to be useful in methods of treatment and as components of an immunogenic composition.
