Abstract: In one aspect, compositions and wound dressings are described herein. In some embodiments, a composition or wound dressing described herein comprises a mesh formed from a plurality of biodegradable polymer fibers; a first active agent dispersed in the biodegradable polymer fibers; a plurality of biodegradable polymer particles disposed in the mesh; and a second active agent dispersed in the biodegradable polymer particles. The particles can be disposed within the interiors of the fibers of the mesh or between the fibers of the mesh. In another aspect, a composition or wound dressing described herein comprises a first perforated mesh formed from a first plurality of biodegradable polymer fibers; and a second perforated mesh formed from a second plurality of biodegradable polymer fibers, wherein the second perforated mesh is disposed on the first perforated mesh in a stacked configuration and the first and second perforated meshes have different degrees of perforation.

Abstract: In one aspect, compositions and wound dressings are described herein. Abstract: A biocompatible and biodegradable polymeric step-index optical fiber includes a core and a cladding around the core. The core is made from a core material fabricated by bonding a citric acid and at least a first monomer using a synthesis process. The cladding is made from a cladding material fabricated by bonding the citric acid and at least a second monomer using the synthesis process. The core has a refractive index higher than that of the cladding, while a difference between an initial modulus of the core and the cladding is preferably less than 30% and a difference between the biodegradation rates of the core and cladding is preferably less than 30% after about 4 weeks. Optical properties of the core and cladding are tunable by adjusting monomer ratios, choices of monomers or cross-linking degrees.

Abstract: In one aspect, compositions are described herein. In some embodiments, a composition described herein comprises the reaction product of (i) citric acid, a citrate, or an ester of citric acid with (ii) a polyol, and (iii) a monomer comprising one or more alkyne moieties and/or azide moieties. The reaction product, in some instances, comprises a polymer. Further, in some cases, a composition described herein comprises a plurality of polymers. In some embodiments, the polymers are selected to be reactive with one another through a click chemistry reaction scheme to form a polymer network. In another aspect, medical implants and medical devices are described herein, the implants and devices comprising a polymer or polymer network described herein.

Abstract: In one aspect, compositions are described herein, and in another aspect methods are described herein. Abstract: Clickable waterborne polymers, click crosslinking of waterborne polymers, click crosslinked waterborne polymers, clickable functional compounds, and click functionalized waterborne polymers are presented. For example, the waterborne polymers have pendant groups bearing alkyne and/or azide groups and alkyne. For example, the functionalized azide-containing functional compounds such as antimicrobial or infrared-refractive compounds. The click crosslinking of clickable waterborne polymers or polymer mixtures, and the click conjugation of clickable waterborne polymers with clickable functional compounds such as clickable antimicrobial or infrared-refractive compounds, which resulted in functional waterborne polymers with antimicrobial or infrared-refractive functions, are presented. The presented polymers, including clickable waterborne polymers, click-crosslinked waterborne polymers, and functional waterborne polymers with, for example, antimicrobial or infrared-refractive functions, can be used in applications such as coating and adhesive compositions. The aqueous suspensions of waterborne polymers can also be used directly as drug delivery systems, or can be crosslinked into hydrogels or composites for biomedical applications such as drug/cell delivery, tissue engineering, and other medical device.

Abstract: A spectrally encoded fluorescence imaging system includes a multi-wavelength excitation light source emitting excitation light for illuminating a sample, optical components for introducing spectral encoding to focus different wavelengths of the excitation light at different positions in the sample to generate fluorescence at different, spatial positions, and band-shifting florescence imaging probes exhibiting excitation-dependent emission band, causing the fluorescence generated at different spatial positions to exhibit different band shifts, such that image information is encoded in the band-shifted fluorescence spectrums for parallel detection by a spectrometer or arrayed detectors operable to resolve different wavelengths.

Abstract: In one aspect, compositions are described herein. In some embodiments, a composition described herein comprises the reaction product of (i) an alkoxylated or alkenoxylated citric acid, citrate, or ester of citric acid, and optionally a non-alkoxylated and non-alkenoxylated citric acid, citrate, or ester of citric acid, with (ii) a polyol. Additionally, in some cases, a composition described herein comprises the reaction product of (i) and (ii) above and (iii) one or more additional monomers. In some cases, the composition is cross-linked by the use of one or more oxidants such as sodium periodate (NaIO4) and/or silver nitrate (AgNO3), which can be reduced into a reduced oxidant that provides short-term antimicrobial activity. Such a composition can have both short-term and long-term antibiotic and antifungal activity.
