Abstract: A high efficiency variable cutoff uniflow steam engine with piston operated valves has an exhaust valve that is held open by a spring during the exhaust stroke but is closed at an end of the exhaust stroke by the piston compressing steam in a compartment associated to act on the exhaust valve. The piston continues to move in the same direction a short distance toward top dead center (TDC) compressing a small residual quantity of steam in the cylinder above the piston during the remaining fraction of the exhaust stroke with sufficient pressure to open the steam inlet valve by steam pressure without an impact caused by physical contact with the piston.

Abstract: Although internal combustion engines typically waste about 75% of their fuel energy, this invention can provides 31% or more brake horsepower than the engine alone by using anhydrous organic racing engine coolant or other anhydrous organic heat transfer fluid arranged to spiral around a combustion chamber until heated to over 250° C. without boiling while exceeding the boiling point of a separate working fluid that is heated by coolant then superheated by exhaust gas before entering a unique positive displacement vapor expander engine having a piston connected by a clutch to a driveshaft that is also driven by the combustion engine to create a high efficiency direct mechanical powertrain which avoids losses of about 15% had a generator charged a battery powering an electric motor-generator connected for regenerative braking to charge batteries. Highly elevated coolant temperatures also reduce cylinder and exhaust temperatures to lower emission toxicity while preventing lubricant burnout.

Abstract: A high efficiency steam engine or steam expander includes a cylinder, cylinder head and piston in which cylinder clearance volume is zero or nearly zero together with a negligible amount of compression such that any pressure in the cylinder clearance volume just before the power stroke is as low as ambient pressure or condenser pressure to provide superior thermal efficiency in a compact compound engine having a high pressure expansion chamber within the piston and low pressure chamber in the cylinder. The inlet valve is opened slightly by piston movement and a steam assist force then drives it to its fully open position. Steam passes from the high pressure chamber to the low pressure chamber through a transfer valve located in the head of the piston and steam is released through an automatic exhaust valve in the cylinder head.

Abstract: A high efficiency uniflow steam engine having automatic poppet valves yieldably based by fluid such as steam held under pressure within a cavity in the engine and a cutoff control for closing a steam inlet valve at any time selected stops the flow of steam into the cylinder. Proximate the end of the exhaust stroke, around 0.12 inch before TDC the cylinder is sealed to thereby compress residual steam as the piston clearance approaches zero; typically, 0.020 inch which raises cylinder pressure enough to open an inlet valve without making physical contact to push the inlet valve open with the piston thereby eliminating a tappet type of noise, shock and wear.

Abstract: A mechanically simplified electric and fluid (gas, vapor or liquid) control for a piston engine, including an engine valve actuator system that eliminates rotating cam shafts and heavy internal combustion engine valve closing springs by using an electromagnet and an armature which is attracted by the electromagnet to initiate movement of both a fluid control valve and the engine valve. When the control valve is moved only slightly off its seat by the armature, fluid pressure instantly drives the control valve a much greater distance closing the engine valve. Opening and closing time is regulated independently. Engine valves are opened by reversing the fluid pressure balance across the control valve at the time selected.

Abstract: A high efficiency uniflow steam engine with automatic inlet and exhaust valves rather than camshaft operated valves includes an electromagnet and cooperating armature that actuates a cutoff control valve for closing a steam inlet valve at any time selected to stop the flow of steam to the cylinder. Approaching the end of the exhaust stroke typically 0.12 inch before TDC the cylinder is sealed thereby compressing the remaining residual steam down to a minute clearance approaching zero, for example, 0.020 inch to raise cylinder steam pressure enough to open the steam inlet valve without physical contact between the piston and the steam inlet valve thereby eliminating tappet noise, shock and wear.
