Abstract: A system and method are provided for capturing carbon dioxide from a flue gas. The system includes an absorber, a stripper, a cooling system and a control module. The cooling system is adapted to independently cool (a) a flue gas upstream from an absorber flue gas inlet and (b) a carbon dioxide-lean carbon capture solution being delivered to each of a plurality of lean carbon capture solution inlets at the different levels of the absorber. The control module includes a controller and a plurality of temperature sensors. The controller is responsive to the plurality of temperature sensors provided at each of the different levels of the absorber to control operation of the cooling system and thereby maintain a desired temperature profile at the different levels of the absorber to enhance rich loading of carbon dioxide from the flue gas to a carbon capture solution and reduce energy requirements for lean carbon capture solution regeneration in the stripper.

Abstract: A carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and utilization system captures CO2 from flue gas and utilizes the same to enhance algae or cyanobacteria growth. The system generally comprises a CO2 capture unit and a utilization unit that is in fluid communication with the CO2 capture unit. The CO2 capture unit includes a membrane CO2 absorber that captures CO2 from incoming flue gas to produce a CO2-rich solvent. The utilization unit processes the CO2-rich solvent to produce a product stream that includes CO2 and NH3 in a predetermined CO2:NH3 ratio. The product stream is delivered to a cultivation subsystem of the utilization of the unit including one or more species of algae or cyanobacteria. A method for capturing and utilizing CO2 is also provided herein.

Abstract: An air preheater for a solid fuel-fired power plant includes a housing, a regenerative heating element received in the housing and adapted to transfer heat from the flue gas stream to the air stream, a plurality of flow control valves upstream of the regenerative heating element and a controller adapted to selectively open and close each valve of the plurality of flow control valves in order to provide an air flow shadow extending downstream over a selected portion of the regenerative heating element whereby ammonium bisulfate previously deposited on the selected portion is decomposed to loose dry ash. A method of decomposing and removing ammonium bisulfate from a regenerative heating element is also presented.
