A binder composition contains an organic solvent and a binder that includes a particulate polymer A and a highly soluble polymer B. The particulate polymer A includes an ethylenically unsaturated acid monomer unit in a proportion of not less than 1.0 mass % and not more than 10.0 mass % and a (meth)acrylic acid ester monomer unit in a proportion of not less than 30.0 mass % and not more than 98.0 mass %. The particulate polymer A includes two particulate polymers A1 and A2 having different volume-average particle diameters. The volume-average particle diameters D50A1 and D50A2 of these particulate polymers A1 and A2 satisfy a formula: D50A2>D50A1≥50 nm.

Provided is a secondary-battery binder composition that demonstrates superior binding capacity and can improve the electrical characteristics of secondary batteries when used to form the battery members. The disclosed binder composition contains a water-soluble thickener (A) having a hydroxy group or a carboxyl group; a cross-linking agent (B) having a carbodiimide group or an oxazoline group; and a particulate polymer (C). The particulate polymer (C) has a functional group reactive with the cross-linking agent (B), and contains an aliphatic conjugated diene monomer unit and an aromatic vinyl monomer unit. The binder composition contains 0.001 mass parts or more but less than 100 mass parts of the cross-linking agent (B) and 10 mass parts or more but less than 500 mass parts of the particulate polymer (C) per 100 mass parts of the water-soluble thickener (A).

Provided is a binder composition for a non-aqueous secondary battery negative electrode with which it is possible to form a negative electrode having excellent peel strength and low tendency to swell after cycling and a secondary battery having excellent cycle characteristics. The binder composition contains a particulate binder and a dispersion medium. The particulate binder has a cross-linked structure through bonding via sulfur. The amount of sediment obtained upon centrifugation of the binder composition at a rotation speed of 110,000 rpm is less than 5.0 parts by mass when the amount of all solid content contained in the binder composition is taken to be 100 parts by mass.

The paste contains a conductive additive, not less than 3 parts by mass and not more than 200 parts by mass of a polymer per 100 parts by mass of the conductive additive, and not less than 12 parts by mass and not more than 350 parts by mass of expandable particles per 100 parts by mass of the conductive additive. The polymer includes at least one functional group selected from the group consisting of a carboxyl group, a hydroxyl group, an amino group, an epoxy group, an oxazoline group, a sulfo group, a nitrile group, an ester group, and an amide group. The expandable particles have an initial thermal decomposition temperature of not lower than 120° C. and not higher than 400° C.
