Abstract:
A resin for sorption of tungsten is prepared by copolymerization of 8-hydroxyquinoline, a polyamine, resorcinol and formaldehyde. The resin finds particular utility for recovery of tungsten from alkaline brines.
Abstract:
A method of manufacturing amphoteric resins. Polymeric beads are treated sequentially with two reagents of opposite acid/base character. The resins are useful in the desalination of water.
Abstract:
An ATR case containing electrical equipment has a flat rectangular ventilator unit clamped and bonded in face-to-face relationship to the underside of the casing for communicating air to the casing-interior from a duct open to the ambient atmosphere at one end of the unit. The communicated air is ducted through a mixed-bed filter in the ventilator unit that converts any airborne salt to water. This water and any air-borne moisture is removed by desiccant material before the salt-filtered air is ducted through outlet vents in the upper wall of the ventilator unit, into the casing interior. The desiccant is contained within a cavity that opens into the outlet ducting but is located beyond the vents for the desalinating filter.
Abstract:
PROCESS FOR THE DEMINERALIZATION OF WATER BY A MIXED BED OF WEAK ACID AND WEAK BASE TYPE ION EXCHANGE RESINS IN WHICH THE MIXED BED IS REGENERATED BY ELUTING IT WITH WATER OR A SALINE SOLUTION AT A TEMPERATURE EXCEEDING THAT EMPLOYED DURING THE ADOSRPTION STAGE. THE PROCESS UTILIZES AS THE WEAK BASE RESIN AT LEAST ONE SOLID POLYMER COMPRISING BETWEEN 3 AND 100 MOLE PEPERCENT OF TRIALLYLAMINE AND A BALANCE OF AT LEAST ONE ALLYLAMINE COMER. THE POLYMER USED IS PREPARED BY EXPOSING THE ALLYLIC MONOMER OR MONOMERS TO A TOTAL DOSE OF FROM 3 TO 20 MEGARADS OF HIGH ENERGY RADIATION AT A TEMPERATURE BETWEEN-80*C. AND + 120*C.
Abstract:
Condensate water containing ammonia is filtered and demineralized in a first bed containing strong acid cation exchange resin, preferably having an effective particle size on the order of 0.30 mm, followed by treatment in a second strong base anion exchange resin, and final treatment in a third bed containing strong acid cation exchange resin. Leakage of solid forming ions is nil and regeneration problems encountered in mixed beds are avoided.
Abstract:
Apparatus for supporting a bed of granular material through which fluid under pressure is continuously passed including an upright elongated vessel, means for diffusing incoming fluid to the vessel, a screen assembly for supporting the bed of granular material and a collecting chamber formed in the bottom of the vessel beneath the screen assembly.
Abstract:
The preparation of anion exchange resins having high density and capacity by bromination of particles of crosslinked vinylaromatic copolymers is described. The process is characterized in that particles of crosslinked vinyltoluene copolymers which have been swollen in a solvent are dibrominated using bromine or a bromine-releasing agent, and the brominated particles are then aminated. The product resins can be used for the extraction of metals, particularly uranium, from solutions such as ore leaching liquor.
Abstract:
A process of making an amphoteric polymeric composition which process comprises dispersing particles of an ion exchange resin comprising either weakly basic or weakly acidic ionogenic groups in a solution comprising one or more monomers containing an ionogenic group, or organic precursor thereof, of opposite charge to the ionogenic groups of the ion exchange resin particle, wherein the ion exchange resin particle and the monomer are not of opposite charge, and a crosslinking agent comprising two or more vinylic or allylic groups; secondly polymerizing the monomer to give a macroporous crosslinked polymer matrix; and thirdly treating the polymeric composition to convert any organic precursors to ionogenic groups to form an amphoteric polymeric composition.
