Abstract:
A system and method for designing an antenna wherein a plurality of antenna designs are visually compared using performance metric plots that distinguish between geometries that meet all requirements and designs that do not.
Abstract:
A method includes obtaining a biological sample from an individual, extracting DNA from cells in the sample, measuring the degree of methylation of the extracted DNA at one or more specified loci, and identifying if at least one locus exhibits an alteration in methylation or a degree of methylation that is outside of a normal limit. The method may further include determining whether an individual was exposed to abuse and/or trauma. In some cases, the method further includes treating the individual with a therapy effective to reverse the differential methylation of the DNA.
Abstract:
An AM-FM representation is used to derive AM and FM based equations that can be applied to two consecutive frames in parallel to derive motion estimates. The multidimensional AM-FM representations provide general representations of non-stationary content in digital images. The AM-FM estimate captures single images and features of a video that can lead to different applications in image and video analysis, for example, computer-aided diagnosis in medical applications or monitoring micro-movements of rocky material in the pit slopes.
Abstract:
The present invention provides one or more injection-lockable whistle-geometry semiconductor ring lasers, which may be cascaded, that are integrated on a common silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate with a single-frequency semiconductor master laser, wherein the light output from the semiconductor master laser is used to injection-lock the first of the semiconductor ring lasers. The ring lasers can be operated in strongly injection-locked mode, while at least one of them is subjected to direct injection current modulation.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a sensor having, one or more optical slab waveguides having one or more target regions. The target regions may interact with gas molecules or trap, entrain or capture one or more targets of interest. The optical slab waveguides are adapted to receive one or more input optical beams from one or more light sources to create a plurality of propagating optical waves in optical slab waveguide. The propagating optical waves interact with said one or more target regions to create an optical output wavefront that may be in the form of a diffraction pattern. The target regions may be functionalized with an antibody, polymer, cell, tissue, or biological material.
Abstract:
A method to simultaneously detect emission intensity or images at multiple distinct emission wavelengths in the analysis of parallel sample streams in a flow-based analysis system and apparatus for performing the described method.
Abstract:
An larvicide comprising an essential oil encapsulated within a non-viable yeast cell. The larvicide is particially effective against mosquito larvae, non-toxic to humans and other non-target species, inexpensive to make, and non-toxic during manufacture, transport, and storage.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a construction system for connecting bamboo segments or poles together, where the segments or poles have non-uniform diameters. The system includes elbow connectors, sleeve connectors, T-shaped connectors and six cavity connectors. Also, part of the connectors include connector segments including an opening defined by a plurality of opposingly located arms separated by one or more channels, and at least one hoop-compression clamp adapted to be positioned around the arms. The arms and hoop-compression clamp cooperate to compress the arms against the bamboo segment to secure bamboo segment within the connector opening.
Abstract:
Novel nano-sized materials and methods for making the same are described. The novel nano-sized materials are suitable for use as catalytic supports and, more specifically, can be decorated with one or more catalytic materials so as to form suitable catalysts for DLFC fuel cells utilizing alkaline media. The present disclosure also provides a small, portable, power supply system that incorporates catalysts utilizing the decorated nano-sized materials described herein.
Abstract:
An optimization technique for use with radiation therapy planning that combines stochastic optimization techniques such as Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) with deterministic techniques to solve for optimal and reliable locations for delivery of radiation doses to a targeted tumor while minimizing the radiation dose experienced by the surrounding critical structures such as normal tissues and organs.
