Abstract: A series of highly luminescent cyclometalated rhodium (III) complexes, with photoluminescence quantum yields up to 0.65 in thin films, have been designed and prepared. The strong luminescence property is realized by the judicious choice of a strong σ-donor cyclometalating ligand with lower-lying intraligand state and the ability to raise the d-d excited state. This is the first report to demonstrate the capability of rhodium(III) complexes as high efficient light-emitting materials for organic light-emitting devices. Compelling external quantum efficiencies of up to 12.2%and operational half-lifetime of over 3, 000 hours have been achieved.

Abstract: Through the strategy of cyclohexane-1, 4-dione embedded into thieno [3, 4-b] thiophene unit, a highly electron-deficient core (TTDO) is synthesized and the corresponding donor polymer (PBTT-F) is also been developed. The nonfullerene photovoltaic device based on this new donor polymer exhibited an outstanding PCE of 16.1%with a very high fill factor of 77.1%, which demonstrate it a very promising donor for high performance solar cells.

Abstract: An acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) type non-fullerene acceptor IDIC-4Cl with indacenodithiophene (IDT) as core, and chlorinated 1, 1-dicyanomethylene-3-indanone (IC) as end groups, was designed and synthesized. The introduction of chlorine atoms can effectively decrease the LUMO and HOMO energy levels due to its ability to accommodate more electron density. From the single crystal structures of IDIC-4Cl, the Cl-substitution's intervention into the molecular configuration and packing mainly lies in three aspects: single molecule configuration, one direction of the intermolecular arrangement and 3D molecular packing. Firstly, the introduction of the chlorine atom in IDIC-4Cl leads to a more planar molecular configuration than the H or F substituted analogs due to the formation of molecular interlocked network induced by the strong Cl···S intermolecular interactions. Secondly, IDIC-4Cl shows the close π-π stacking distance and the smallest dihedral angle (0 degree) between adjacent molecules to form ideal J-aggregation, which should be beneficial for charge transportation between different connected molecules in this direction. Finally, the interlocked interactions between Cl and S atoms lead to a highly ordered 3D molecular packing, in which the end groups will form an ideal overlapped packing among different molecules, while the other two analogs with H or F show less ordered packing of their IC ending groups. OSCs based on IDIC-4Cl shows the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.24%, with an open-circuit voltage of 0.83 V, a high short-circuit current density of 16.21 mA cm -2 , and a fill factor of 68.69%. These results demonstrate that chlorination is a very powerful strategy to prepare high performance small molecule acceptors because of its interlocked network molecular packing identity either in pristine acceptor or blend films. Meanwhile, chlorinated compounds are easily synthesized with lower price, which will be definitely beneficial for the large-scale production in next commercialization.

Abstract: Through the use of a rhodamine appended chelate, a versatile strategy has been demonstrated to generate mitochondria-targeting photosensitizers via the incorporation of variety of luminescent transition metal systems. The generation of triplet excited state of rhodamine moiety endows the complexes with mitochondria-targeting photosensitizing ability to form singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) for use as photodynamic therapy (PDT) agent. The combination of rhodamine organic dye and luminescent transition metal centers in such hybrid systems exhibits the synergistic merits, including low dark cytotoxicity, selective tumor cell uptake, high molar absorptivity for low-energy excitation in the visible region, and high photostability.
