Abstract: A method for producing a glass preform for an optical fiber comprises flame hydrolyzing a glass raw material in an oxyhydrogen flame to form glass fine particles, and depositing the fine particles on a seed member to produce a solid or hollow cylinderical shoot preform, and is characterized by dehydrating the shoot preform by holding the whole preform in a heating atmosphere containing a dehydrating agent kept at 1,100 to 1,400≦̸C for such period of time the diameter of the shoot preform shrinks by at least 20%, and sintering the preform by gradually introducing it into an atmosphere of a pure inert gas kept at a sintering temperature 1500-1900≦̸C.
