Abstract: A method for manufacturing a glass preform for use in optical fiber comprises flame hydrolyzing a glass raw material in an oxyhydrogen flame to form fine glass particles of quartz, depositing the particles on a seed member to produce a solid or hollow cylindrical shoot preform which contains GeO2, and heating and sintering the preform, wherein the preform contains 10-80% by weight of GeO2, the sintering atmosphere consists of an inert gas, at least a part of the atmosphere is kept at 1,600-2,000≦̸C, and the preform is introduced at 3-20 mm/min.

Abstract: The optical fiber glass preform is prepd. by heat treatment in fluorine-contg. atmos. of shoot preform. Fine glass particles deposit is impregnated with fluorine at such a temp. that it is kept in porous state, is then vitrified under a F compound-contg. atmos. in a furnace at 1100-1400 C. The glass particles deposits are uniformly doped wiht F, and impurity content of the preform is lowered in a large extent.
