PURPOSE: A gene controlling the flowering time of plants and a method for manipulating the flowering time of plants using the same gene are provided, which gene is useful for improving properties associated with the flowering time in plants and screening the flowering time-controlling gene in other plants. CONSTITUTION: The gene LOV1 controlling the flowering time of plants comprises the nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:1 and has the nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:3, wherein the gene controlling the flowering time of plants encodes a protein LOV1 controlling the flowering time of plants having the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO:2 which is isolated from Arabidopsis thaliana; and the gene inhibits the flowering stimulating gene AGL20. The method for manipulating flowering time of plants comprises over-expressing the gene LOV1 for delaying the flowering time or inhibiting the expression of the gene LOV1 for stimulating the flowering time.

A method for controlling flowering time of plant by using ECL1 gene is provided to induce the early or late flowering of plants, and increase production yield of flowers and seeds or production amount of leaf and stem. An SVP(short vegetative phase) gene for controlling the flowering time is provided to mediate the signal transfer process in response to changes of ambient temperature and control the phase transition period in the development step of flower, so that the gene is useful for promoting the flowering time to produce rapidly flowers and seeds, or delaying the flowering time to increase production of leaf and stem. An SVP gene for controlling the flowering time has the nucleotide sequence of SEQ ID NO:1 and inhibits the expression of FT(flowering locus T) sequence by binding to CArG motif of the FT sequence. A transgenic plant is prepared by transforming a plant with a recombinant vector containing the SVP gene. The flowering time of a plant is delayed by overexpressing the SVP gene in the plant, or promoted by inhibiting expression of SVP gene in the plant, wherein the plant is Arabidopsis thaliana.
