Abstract: Binders which comprise (A) an aqueous emulsion of a copolymer A, having a glass transition temperature of 0-50 DEG C., of monoolefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid esters, with or without styrene, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride and acrylonitrile, which copolymer contains, as copolymerized units, small amounts of monoolefinically unsaturated monocarboxylic acids and/or dicarboxylic acids and/or their amides (of which the nitrogen atoms may or may not be alkyl-substituted and/or alkylol-substituted) and small amounts of monomers containing carbonyl groups, (B) from 0.05 to 1 mole, per mole of carbonyl groups present in the copolymer A, of a water-soluble aliphatic dihydrazine compound and (C) from 0 to 0.02 mole, per mole of dihydrazine compound, of a water-soluble zinc, manganese, cobalt and/or lead salt, or particularly suitable for use in paints and pebble dash renderings, since they give films which adhere particularly well to alkyd resin primers and which show particularly little tendency to whitening.

Abstract: High gloss, cover paints contg. inorganic pigments and aq. polymer dispersions, as binders, are applied in >=2 layers. At least one primer layer with pigment vol. concn. 15-95% is applied first and coated with a top layer having pigment vol. concn. 0-10%. The aq. dispersion used as binder for top layer contains a water-insol. copolymer with vitreous transition temp. 0-40 (5-25) degrees C and =25 (30) wt. % latex particles of average dia. 300 (50-200) nm. The paints are used for coating internal or external walls. Degree of gloss of top layer exceeds 64% (e.g. 72% at measuring angle 20 degrees) compared with 60% with standard dispersions paints, and increases inversely to inorganic pigment concn. in top layer.

Abstract: Aqueous polyacrylate dispersions having improved flow characteristics are prepared by polymerizing esters of acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid and alkanols of 1 to 10 carbon atoms, with or without admixture of styrene and/or vinyl esters and/or water-soluble monoolefinically unsaturated comonomers (the monomer feed being in the form of an emulsion), in aqueous emulsion in the presence of a free radical polymerization initiator, a protective colloid, a nonionic emulsifier and a regulator, at least a part of the protective colloid being introduced into an aqueous initial charge, and a water-soluble regulator being employed in the initial charge and in the feed.

Abstract: Aq coating and covering media contain short fibres having a high degree of fibrillation, from water-, alkali- and acid-insoluble thermoplastics. They are useful as paints, resin-bonded plasters, adhesives, paper coating compsns., putties and cements. Thickening activity of most water-repellent polymer fibrils can reach, in aq. systems, that of many water-soluble thickners. Films obtd. are waterproof. Polymers may be esp. 2-8 C -olefin polymers, polymethyl methacrylate and polyvinyl halides.
