Abstract: Methyl formate is prepared by reaction of carbon monoxide and methanol at elevated pressure and elevated temperature in the presence of an alkali metal methoxide by A) mixing the starting substances in a mixing zone, partially allowing them to react, saturating the reaction solution with CO and B) carrying the reaction to completion in one or more subsequent reaction zones without addition of further starting compounds.
