Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing polymer dispersions of at least one of the monomers that can be polymerized from the following groups: alkyl(meth)acrylates, vinyl esters of carboxylic acids comprising 1-20 C atoms, vinyl aromatic compounds, nitriles, vinyl halides, vinyl ethers, hydrocarbons comprising 2-8 C atoms and monomers containing hydroxyl groups, using emulsion polymerization technology at a polymerization temperature of at least 40 DEG C in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator. The polymer which is produced from at least 85 wt. % of one or several of said monomers is produced in the following way: in a first stage, water, which acts as an inert solvent during the reaction, optionally a dispersant, seed particles and optionally a first sub-quantity of the monomer(s) are added. In a second stage, the initiator is added. In a third stage, the remaining quantity or the total quantity of the monomer(s) is added directly or in the form of an emulsion in the presence of additional water. The first and second stages, or the second and third stages respectively can be carried out as a single-stage, whereas the second and third stages can also be carried out in a gradient operation. In individual or all stages of the reaction mixture that is present as a dispersion, said mixture is displaced by an external circuit (10) that leads from and returns to the polymerization container (2). The circuit comprises one or more hose or cylinder diaphragm pumps (7), which transport the product with a low shear rate and at least one heat exchanger (8), whereby the polymerization temperature lies between 40 DEG C and 120 DEG C.

Abstract: Temporary protection of surfaces is achieved by application of an aqueous polymer dispersion containing a) at least one C2-C10 olefin, and b) at least one comonomer that may be copolymerized with the olefin under radical conditions. The dispersion layer applied is then dried to give a solid polymer film having a mean thickness exceeding 20 mu m. The invention also refers to coloured polymer dispersions and their use in temporarily protecting or in colouring surfaces.

In a second stage, the initiator is added, and in a third stage, the remainder or full amount of monomer(s) are added directly or in emulsion form in the presence of further water and, where appropriate, further dispersing assistant or other auxiliaries. It is possible for the first and second stages or second and third stages in each case also to be run in one stage while second and third stages can be run through in a gradient procedure, and in all or some stages the reaction mixture present as a dispersion is moved by an external circuit ( 10 ) which leads from and back to the polymerization vessel ( 2 ) and which comprises one or more extremely low-shear-conveying cylinder or tubular diaphragm pumps ( 7 ) and at least one heat exchanger ( 8 ), the polymerization temperature being between 40° C. and 120° C.

Abstract: A 3-step process for preparation of polymer dispersions from monomers by emulsion polymerization involves: (a) addition (sic) of water as inert solvent and dispersion agent; (b) addition of initiator; and (c) addition of part or the whole amount of monomers directly or as an emulsion in the presence of further water and emulsion polymerization at 40-120 deg C is new. A process for preparation of polymer dispersions from monomers from alkyl (meth)acrylates, 1-20C vinyl esters of carboxylic acids, vinylaromatic compounds, nitriles, vinyl halogens, vinylether, 2-8C hydrocarbon with one or two double bonds, or OH group containing monomers by emulsion polymerization at least at 40 deg C in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator. At least 85% of the polymer obtained from one or more of these monomers is prepared in the three steps: (a) addition (sic) of water as inert solvent and dispersion agent; (b) addition of initiator; and (c) addition of part or the whole amount of monomers directly or as an emulsion in the presence of further water and optionally dispersing agent, and emulsion polymerization at 40-120 deg C. Steps (a) to (c) can be individual steps or can be part of a gradient process, and in the individual or all the stages the reaction medium dispersion is fed to the polymerization vessel (2) through an external circuit (10), which has one or more low shear cylinders or membrane pumps (7) and at least one heat exchanger (8) of essentially laminar streaming profile. An Independent claim is included for the apparatus for storage and addition of the reaction and adjuvant materials, a reaction vessel (2), a heating/cooling jacket (3), a device (6) for discharging the vessel (2), an external circuit (10), with one or more low shear supply cylinders or membrane pumps, at least one heat exchanger (8) with a laminar or turbulent profile ,and connecting pipes (20).
