Abstract: Non-combustible composite insulating materials consist of a core layer with low density and, applied on both sides, cover layers with high density and high mechanical strength. The heat-insulating core layer contains inorganic lightweight particles and the cover layers contain inorganic or organic fibres which in each case are bonded by heat-resistant organic binders. The insulating materials can be used as construction elements.

Abstract: The sealing in of fire-protective water-contg. alkali metal silicate strips comprises placing the strips longitudinally on a continuously conveyed flexible metal foil, coated on both sides with a hot-sealable plastics material. The foil is 2-3x wider than the strip. Fixed guide units are used to surround the strip first with one side of the projecting foil, while the other projecting side is placed on top of the first part. The surrounded strip is heated to hot-sealing temp. and the 2 superimposed parts of the plastics-coated metal foil are tightly welded to one another by pressing. Tight sealing-in of the fire-protective strip is achieved without the formation of a projecting weld seam.

Abstract: Fire-protective strips, which foam above 150 degrees C in a fire, are sealed in by a process comprising (A) placing the strips longitudinally on a continuously guided flexible metal foil, which is coated on both sides with a hot-sealable polymer and which is 2-3 x as wide as the strip. (B) Stationary guide units wrap one laterally projecting metal foil part over the strip. The other projecting part is placed on top. (C) The wrapped strip is heated to hot sealing temp. (D) The 2 superimposed plastic-coated metal foil parts are firmly welded to one another by pressing. The strips are tightly sealed, without the formation of a projecting weld seam.

Abstract: In the compsn. 15-40% (wt.%) of the sodium silicate is replaced by potassium- or magnesium-silicate. The material pref. contains 20-50% (25-40%) water. A pref. material is one in which 20-35% of the sodium silicate is replaced by potassium silicate, esp. where the latter has a molar ratio (R) of K2O:SiO2 or 1:1 to 1:6, partic. 1:2 to 1:4. The compsn. pref. also contains the usual addns., e.g. wetting agents, foamants, dyes, pigments, reinforcement, esp. using 2-20% glass fibres. The material is pref. made by adding the K or Mg-silicate as solids or an aq. suspension, together with any addns., to an aq. suspension of the Na silicate. Used in the insulation and protection of openings and corridors against the ingress of fire and smoke in buildings, or as a fire protection glass.

Abstract: Insulating panels are made with high resistance to fire and a density of 80-230 g/l, from a mixt. of (a) 99-80 wt. % light inorganic particles with average dia. 0.05-3 mm and bulk density 30-150 g/l; (b) 0-50% inorganic fibres or granules; and (c) 1-25 wt.% organic binder with high mol. wt., based on (co)polymers of unsatd. olefinic monomers. The novelty is that (a) and (b) are mixed with a 1-50 wt. % aq. dispersion of (c) and the bulk of the water removed mechanically. The damp mixt. is then pressed into panels 1-25 cm thick and dried, pref. at 100-150 degrees C. Building panels are obtd. with good mechanically strength which, in the event of fire, evolve virtually no combustible and toxic gases. The panels also meet DIN specification 4102, class B1 (difficult to ignite), and class W 90 (high fire-resistance). Pref. panels have density 120-180 g/l.

Abstract: Non-flammable insulating materials having good fire resistance and a density of from 80 to 230 g/l, which materials comprise A. from 99 to 80% by weight of inorganic lightweight particles, preferably expanded perlite or vermiculite, B. from 0 to 20% by weight of fibrous or granular inorganic additives and C. from 1 to 20% by weight of a heat-resistant organic high molecular weight binder, preferably a phenol-formaldehyde condensate, and which contain, as an additional binder C' to prevent water absorption, from 0.2 to 4% by weight of an alkylphenol/phenyl/formaldehyde condensate. The materials may be used as heat insulating materials or building materials.
