Abstract: A process for the preparation of homopolymers and copolymers of alpha -monoolefins by polymerizing the monomer or monomers with a Ziegler catalyst system comprising (1) a titanium-containing catalyst component and (2) a relevant conventional organo-aluminum compound, (1.1) the catalyst component (1) having been prepared by (1.1.1) milling a titanium compound (I) of the formula TiCl3.z(AlCl3) or ClmTi(OB)4-m, where z is from 0 to 0.5, m is from 0 to 3 and B is alkyl, together with (1.1.2) a magnesium alcoholate (II) and, if desired, (1.1.3) a metal chloride (III) of the formula AlCl3, ZnCl2 or MnCl2, to form a milled product (IV), in which polymerization process a catalyst component (1) is employed, in the preparation of which (1.2) the milled product (IV) obtained according to (1.1) is brought together, in an additional step (1.2.1), with (1.2.2) an alkanol (V) and (1.2.3) a liquid alkane (VI), to form a suspension (VII), and thereafter (1.3), in a further additional step (1.3.1), there is added, to the suspension (VII) obtained according to (1.2), (1.3.2) a metal compound (VIII) of a certain type, the metal being aluminum, silicon or titanium, while preserving the suspension state, the product (IX), which results from stage (1.3) and is present as a solid phase in the suspension, constituting the titanium-containing catalyst component (1).

Abstract: A Ti chloride component for a Ziegler-Natta polymerisation catalyst is prepd. by subjecting a component consisting at least mainly of TiCl3 or TiCl4 to a CO2 atmos. under a pressure of 0.1-10 bars. at between -20 degrees C and 100 degrees C, for 0.5-60 mins. Higher catalyst productivity is obtd. Polymers of higher crystallinity are produced. The catalyst contg. the Ti component and an Al-alkyl has an induction period, which reduces the risk of blockage by polymer on addn. of the Ti component. The catalyst is esp. used in (co)polymerisation of propylene or of ethylene.

Abstract: In the prodn. of a TiCl3 catalyst component for Ziegler-Natta-type polymerisation catalysts, an appropriate catalyst component consisting (mainly) of TiCl3 is exposed to a CO atmos. at 0.1-10 (esp. 0.5-1 bar) for 0.5-60 (esp. 5-15) min. at -20 to 100 (esp. 10 to 30) degrees C. These catalysts are used for the homo- and co-polymerisation of 2-6C mono-olefins. The catalyst not only yields polymers in high yields and with high crystallinity but also has the property of becoming active on mixing with the Al alkyl component only after a sufficiently long induction period, which is partic. important in continuous polymerisation. Esp. good results are obtd. in dry polymerisation, although it is also possible to work in liq. medium.

Abstract: Purificn. of waste water generated during mfr. of styrene bead polymers (I) in presence of vinyl pyrrolidone of vinyl alcohol polymers as suspension stabilisers, comprises adding a pptg. agent (II) then removing the sepd. suspended solids. (II) is 0.05-3, esp. 0.1-1 pt. per 100 pts. waste water of a water-soluble amide-NH4 or diNH4 salt of a styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer of up to 50% maleic anhydride content which has Staudinger index (in DMF at 25 degrees C) 5-150, pref. 10-60 cc./g. The pH of the water is adjusted to 3 with inorganic acid. Pref. (II) is added as a 0.1-20, esp. 1-10 wt. % aq. soln. or dispersion. Almost complete removal of suspended solids is economically achieved leaving clear water of very low residual organic C content.

Abstract: Propylene/ethylene block copolymers are prepared by a process in which, in an agitated bed comprising small polymer particles, first (I) propylene is homopolymerized from the gas phase, in a first polymerization zone, by feeding in a Ziegler-Natta catalyst comprising (1) a titanium(III) component and (2) a dialkyl-aluminum chloride component, with or without (3) a further catalyst component, and then (II) the product obtained in the first polymerization zone is fed into a second polymerization zone, where a mixture of propylene and ethylene is polymerized with the propylene homopolymer present in this product. In this process, the Ziegler-Natta catalyst employed contains a titanium(III) component (1) which is prepared by subjecting (1.1) a titanium-containing compound (a) of the formula TiCl3. nAlCl3 and (1.2) an electron donor (b), consisting of (b1) an ester of a particular class or (b2) a phosphorus-containing compound of a particular class, to a special milling procedure, the particular features of which are special metering and temperature conditions, suspending the resulting intermediate in a mixture of a liquid hydrocarbon (c) and an oxygen-containing compound (d), comprising (d1) an ether of a certain class and/or (d2) an ester of a certain class, and then heating the suspension obtained. The solid remaining in suspension is the titanium(III) component (1) which is to be employed for the polymerization. The polymer obtained has improved morphological properties.

Abstract: In the prepn. of a new Ti(III)-component (1) for Ziegler-Natta catalyst systems, a Ti-contg. cpd. having TiCl3.nAlCl3, (A), (where n is 0.01-1) is ground with a P-contg. cpd. having formula OmP(R1)3, (B), (where m is 0 or 1 ; R1 is R2, OR2 or N(R2)2 and R2 is 1-24C alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl). Specific grinding conditions are used. (B) is added to (A) in quantities corresponding to molar ratio Ti in (A) : (B) 1 : 0.01 to 1 : 1. A suspension of (i) 1 pt.wt. of prod.; (ii) 0.5-20 pts.wt. hydrocarbon, (C), liq. under normal conditions and boiling below 150 deg.C; and (iii) an O-contg. cpd. (D) is prepd. (D) can be a 4-30C ether of formula R8-O-R8' (where R8 and R8' are 1-15C alkyl, Ph or 7-14C alkyl-phenyl) and/or a 2-34C ester having formula R9'-O-CO-R9 or R9'-O-CO-CR9=CHR9 (where R9 is H, 1-12C alkyl, 7-14C phenyl-alkyl in which Ph is opt. mono-alkyl substd., Ph or 7-14C alkyl-phenyl ; R9' is 1-8C alkyl, Ph or 7-14C phenyl-alkyl). (D)-quantities are such that molar ratio Ti in (A) to (D) is 1 : 0.01 to 1 : 2. The suspension is strongly stirred 5-120 min. at 40-140 deg. C and cooled to 15-25 deg.C. The solid separated from the suspension is opt. washed with a hydrocarbon, liq. under normal conditions and boiling below 150 deg.C and dried to recover the new Ti(III)-componentt (1). The catalyst systems are used in 2-6C alpha-mono-olefin (co)polymerisation. Stereoregular polymers are obtd. in high yields. The prods. have a low fine grain proportion.

Abstract: A process for the manufacture of homopolymers and copolymers of alpha -monoolefins by polymerizing the monomer or monomers at relatively low temperatures under relatively low pressures by means of a Ziegler-Natta catalyst comprising (I) a titanium chloride component and (II) an aluminumalkyl component, wherein the titanium chloride component (I) employed is obtained by exposing a conventional catalyst component consisting, or substantially consisting, of titanium trichloride or titanium tetrachloride, to a carbon dioxide atmosphere under specific conditions. Catalysts obtained from titanium chloride components (I) which have been treated in this way exhibit a relatively long induction period.

Abstract: Ziegler catalyst system for the (co)polymerisation of 2-6C alpha-monolefins at 30-200 degrees C and 0.1-200 bar consists of (A) a component contg. V, (B) a metal cpd. of the formula MeAm-nXn (in which Me is Al, Mg or Zn. A is a 1-12C hydrocarbyl gp. X is Cl, Br or H. m is the valency of Me. n is 0 to m-1) and opt. (C) a 1-12C halohydrocarbon, the atomic ratio of V:Me being 1:0.1-400 and of (C);Me 1:0.1-60. The novelty is that (A) is the solid phase prod. obtd. by contacting a finely-divided, porous inorganic oxide (I) of the formula SiO2, aAl2O3 (in which a is 0-2) and a soln. of 1000 wt. pts. alcohol of the formula Z-OH (in which Z is a satd. 1-8C hyerocarbyl gp.) and 0.01-5 pts. V in the form of VX'3 (in which X is Cl and/or Br) in a (I):V wt. ratio of 1:0.01-0.2 to form a dispersion and evaporating the dispersion to dryness at a temp. below 200 degrees C and above the m.pt. of Z-OH. (I) has a particle dia. of 1-1000 um, pore vol. of 0.3-3 cm3/g and surface area of 100-1000 m2/g. The supported catalyst makes it possible to reduce the mol. wt. of the polymer relatively strongly, even with relatively small amts. of H2 as regulator, which is esp. important in the dry phase polymerisation process. Polymers with esp. favourable morphological properties can be obtd.

Abstract: A process for the manufacture of homopolymers and copolymers of alpha -monoolefins by polymerizing the monomer or monomers by means of a Ziegler-Natta catalyst comprising (I) a titanium trichloride component and (II) an aluminum-alkyl component, wherein the titanium trichloride component (I) employed is obtained by (1) in a first stage moistening a suitable conventional catalyst component, consisting entirely or substantially of titanium trichloride, with a hydrocarbon mixture comprising a liquid alkane hydrocarbon and a liquid benzene hydrocarbon and (2) in a second stage drying the catalyst component, moistened with the hydrocarbon mixture, under an inert gas, with constant mechanical mixing, within a certain period, at a temperature which is from 5 DEG to 50 DEG C. above the boiling point of the highest-boiling hydrocarbon present in the hydrocarbon mixture which has been used to moisten the component. Homopolymers and copolymers having particularly advantageous morphological properties can be manufactured by the process of the invention.
