Abstract: Nitrobiphenyls and nitroterphenyls are prepared by reacting, in presence of Cu2O and a solvent, an aromatic nitro-compound with an aromatic compound substituted by (a) a halogen atom and an electron-attracting group in ortho-position thereto, or (b) an iodine atom, both reactants being compounds of the benzene series. Examples describe the production of 2,21-(and 2,4-)dinitrobiphenyl, and a number of methoxy-substituted nitrobiphenyls and nitroterphenyls.
