    Abstract: Apparatus for measuring the effective index of refraction of optical fibres, in which a source 1 sends light radiation into a piece 2 of fibre, the wavelength of which can be made to vary within a predetermined interval, and a detector 5 collects the radiation emerging from the piece 2 and is connected to means 5-6-7 for measuring the strength of the radiation collected by the detector upon varying the wavelength, to determine the period of oscillation of the transmissivity or reflectivity of the fibre and to obtain from said period the value of the effective index of refraction.
