    Abstract: Apparatus for measuring the effective refractive index in optical fibres, in which a source (1) sends light radiations, the wavelength of which can be varied within a predetermined interval, into a fibre span (2), and a detector (5) collects the radiation outgoing from the span (2) and is connected with means (6, 7) for measuring the intensity of the radiation collected by the detector as the wavelength varies, in order to determine the oscillation period of the fibre transmittance or reflectivity and to obtain the effective refractive index from such period.

    Abstract: A pump system for waveguide lasers or amplifiers, formed from a waveguide having a monomode active region, in which the pump radiation is launched into a multimode guide surrounding the active region. This radiation is obtained as a sum of the radiations emitted by a plurality of independent sources. The waveguide can be a length of fibre, and the multimode guide a cladding surrounding the fibre, or the monomode and miltimode waveguide can be formed, as regions of an integrated optical guide, the multimode waveguide being formed by a confinement region and the monomode guide by an active region of the guide.

    Abstract: A coupler is provided for establishing optical connection between a first optical fibre and a plurality of further optical fibres, formed by a transparent member in the shape of a paraboloid limited by a plane perpendicular to the paraboloid axis and having an inwardly reflective curved surface, an array of lenses having axes parallel to the paraboloid axis, the array being coplanar with the perpendicular limiting plane and including a first lens coaxial with the axis of the paraboloid, and centring means for receiving and aligning the ends of a plurality of optical fibres coaxially with said lenses, the end of the first optical fibre being located coaxial with the lens coaxial with the paraboloid axis so that an image of the fibre end is formed at the focus of the paraboloid, and the further optical fibre ends being located coaxial with further lenses in the array such that radiation parallel to the lens axes is condensed on the further fibre ends.
