Abstract:
A sequential buffer for a magnetic tape data storage system comprises a plurality of segments. A buffer management system buffers data in the sequential buffer, conducting a data transfer process. Subsequently, some of the buffered data is maintained in some, but less than all, the segments of the buffer. Additionally, the maintained buffered data is indicated as VALID data. Thus, a subsequent process may be conducted directly using the data maintained in the buffer, and avoids moving the tape to reread the data.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a system for calibrating a multimode device in order to execute reading and/or writing on one of a plurality of writing modes. SOLUTION: The process of reading data written on an information medium on one of a plurality of writing modes includes the step of setting the configuration of a correction circuit capable of being set to a configuration for measuring a parameter corresponding to one of the plurality of writing modes in order to execute measurement corresponding to the writing mode during a given correction cycle, and executing a plurality of measurements for the read data by using the correction circuit set to the configuration in order to measure one or a plurality of reading parameters simultaneously, and the step of optimizing the writing mode of the multimode device based on a selected measured value. Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a frequency controlling device with digital edge processor for estimating center frequencies of recorded signals having known formats of data recorded on a CLV optical disk or a magnetic tape or the like. SOLUTION: A read-in channel 110 includes a sampling detector 118 which supplies an edge position signal (PAT) indicating positions or recorded pulse edges by sampling a recorded signal at a known rate. An edge pattern identifying device being in a frequency controlling device 65 detects whether the edge signal of the recorded signal matches a presribed element of known format or not. There are, for example, a pulse having a prescribed length in which edges are opened with a prescribed interval, a prescribed pulse pattern or a pulse or a pattern having a known position in examples of the prescribed elements. An interval counter is connected to the pattern identifying device and measures the length of the interval between edges of a coincident pulse or pattern by making the length of a sample a unit.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decode without using massive logic in addition to servo logic by using a periodical burst pattern and respectively shifting second, fourth bursts and second, third bursts from an equal interval position in respective bursts consisting of transitions of five ways and four ways. SOLUTION: Second, fourth transitions of five transitions burst are shifted, and second, third transitions of four transitions burst are shifted for an uncoded timing base servo pattern consisting of magnetic flux transition of an equal interval recorded on a track with a continuous length at a nonparallel angle as a coded servo pattern, and then, a bit is coded. That is, they are shifted so as to come close to or part from each other to be coded to '1' '0'. Thus, the necessity that massive logic are decoded is eliminated, and a simple technique suitable for tape drive of a low end is obtained.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a pattern of a separated servo band have at least one distinguishing property for a pattern of the other separated servo band in a tape having the separated servo band of a pattern arranged in the horizontal direction over the whole tape. SOLUTION: The distinguishing property enables the identification of the separated servo band. For example, a pattern of the separated servo band has the detectable transition of a different azimuth orientation such as inversion in the horizontal direction for the other servo band. In the other method, a variation quantity in the width of a gap of a pattern is given to the other servo band. In the other method, a variation quantity in the number of the detectable transition of the pattern is given to the pattern of the other servo band. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a calibrating device unified for operating by plural calibrating modes of a multimode information storage system for the purpose of calibrating an optical disk drive device, etc., by plural write modes. SOLUTION: An event processing circuit 306 and a measuring circuit 308 can be set in plural constitutions, each corresponding to different calibrating measurement of its own. Parameters of one or plural read data written in an optical disk by the optical disk drive device capable of operating in a specific write mode are measured by each individual formation at the same time. An effective measured value is selected for the purpose of verifying two different or the same two parameters in different verification by verification circuits 310 and 312. An average value of measured parameters is calculated from a totaling and counting part 304 by the calibrating device, and based on this average value, the multimode optical disk drive device under its present write mode is calibrated.

SOLUTION: In an initialization module, a plurality of branch metrics and a plurality of path memories are initialized. In a coefficient module, a plurality of coefficients are calculated. In the calculation module, a first and second designated likelihood functions are calculated. In a selection module, a third designated branch metric is calculated as the maximum value among the first and the second designated likelihood functions. In the path metric module, the third designated path memory is calculated from a first and second designated path memory. In a result module, a data output value is identified from one or more path memories. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide selected and different superimpose data information to identify a separated servo band for addressablility in which the separated servo band is independent in a magnetic tape having a vertical direction servo band in which servo information provided with superimpose data information is separated. SOLUTION: Servo information has transition extended in the horizontal direction not parallel to indicate the positioning of a horizontal direction, The selected different superimpose data information can have a lack of a part of the servo band. When the superimpose data information is the position information of a vertical direction, The selected different superimpose data information can have position information in which one or a plurality of servo bands are different. The selected different superimpose data information can have a band identifier in the superimpose data information of one or the plurality of servo bands. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively and precisely identify the serve gap by dividing a detected group timing gap by a specified divisor, feeding a timing interval gap detection threshold, and measuring the timing intervals between detected transition stripes. SOLUTION: A divider 170 divides a detected group B timing interval by a specified divisor to output a divided timing interval gap detection threshold. The divisor is selected by a divisor selector 174 to generate longer thresholds than the timing interval between transition stripes of burst one by one, and this involves values for generating shorter thresholds than the timing intervals of a min. interval gap at the edge of a servo pattern. A servo gap output value of a comparator 110 is fed back to an interval counter 120, and the count is fixed to latch the detection. When a pulse detector 122 detects the next stripe transition, the interval counter is reset to zero again.
