Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decode without using massive logic in addition to servo logic by using a periodical burst pattern and respectively shifting second, fourth bursts and second, third bursts from an equal interval position in respective bursts consisting of transitions of five ways and four ways. SOLUTION: Second, fourth transitions of five transitions burst are shifted, and second, third transitions of four transitions burst are shifted for an uncoded timing base servo pattern consisting of magnetic flux transition of an equal interval recorded on a track with a continuous length at a nonparallel angle as a coded servo pattern, and then, a bit is coded. That is, they are shifted so as to come close to or part from each other to be coded to '1' '0'. Thus, the necessity that massive logic are decoded is eliminated, and a simple technique suitable for tape drive of a low end is obtained.

Abstract: The present invention provides an integrally formed ramp that is used for evacuating the suspension arm of a data storage device. The ramp has sliding portions, each having guiding zones and a landing zone. The boundary between the guiding zones and the landing zone is formed parallel to a reference line, so even if the landing portion had a recessed shape, the sliding portion could be molded with a casting mold by pulling out the casting mold in the direction of the reference line. The necessary portion of a support portion which is formed with the same casting mold as the sliding portions is formed so as not to disturb the pulling-out of the casting mold in the direction of the reference line. The integrally molded ramp is high in fabrication accuracy and excellent in defining an accurate loading/unloading position of the suspension arm.

Abstract: A track following servo system is disclosed for use with magnetic recording media 20 in which magnetic servo track 27 patterns contain transitions recorded at more than one azimuthal orientation across the width of the servo track. The timing of a signal derived from reading at any point across the width of such a pattern varies continuously as the read head is moved across the servo track. The pattern is read by a servo read head 26 whose width is small compared to the servo track pattern. The combination of a wide servo pattern and a narrow servo read head offers excellent position sensing linearity and dynamic range. In the preferred embodiment, the servo read head is also narrow with respect to the data tracks, which provides the additional advantages of superior immunity to position sensing errors caused by defects or temporal variations in the servo read head, defects in the servo pattern, wear of the head, or debris collection. Position sensing with this system is achieved by deriving a ratio of two servo pattern intervals and therefore is insensitive to medium speed during reading. The servo patterns may include spacing intervals 70 recognizable for error detection and correction purposes. The servo tracks may be recorded using a patterned multiple gap servo write head 400 whose magnetic gaps have geometries appropriate to generate the desired servo patterns.

Abstract: A lift tab for a load/unload type of data storage hard drive and a method of smoothing the lift tab. The method includes the step of striking the lift tab with short duration (e.g. 10-500 nanosecond) energy pulses to melt a thin surface layer of the lift tab. The melted layer flows under surface tension forces, smoothing out bumps and scratches. The melted layer quickly refreezes, forming an exceptionally smooth melted and refrozen spot. Preferably, the melted and refrozen spot is 0.2-10 microns deep. More preferably, the melted and refrozen spot is in the range of 1.0 to 3.0 microns thick. The lift tab can have a large number of melted and refrozen spots. The size of the melted and refrozen spots is practically limited by power available from energy sources such as lasers. Preferably, the melted and refrozen spots are at least several tens of microns in diameter. The present invention includes lift tabs having melted and refrozen spots. Also, the present invention includes head gimbal assemblies and hard drives having lift tabs with melted and refrozen spots.

Abstract: A data recording disk file of the liquid-bearing type has an improved head-disk interface provided in by a transducer carrier (100) with new properties. The carrier (100) supports a conventional head (109) for reading and writing data to the disk (130). The carrier has an air-bearing surface (110,112) near its front end, a ski pad (118) near its rear end, and a plurality of ski feet or struts (120,122) which support the air-bearing surface off the liquid film (146) of the disk when the disk file is not operating. The air-bearing surface is in the form of a pair of air-bearing rails (110,112) located outboard of the rear ski pad so that no air-bearing effect occurs in the rearward region of the carrier to assure the skiing action of the rear ski pad. As operational speed is approached the air-bearing lifts the struts off the disk and the rear ski pad is the sole ski foot on the liquid film. The rear ski pad has a convexly shaped leading edge which is wider than its trailing edge to minimize static friction and lubricant thinning during skiing, and the angle between the leading and trailing edges of the pad is selected to enable the pad to ski over the wide ranges of carrier-disk velocity which occur as the carrier moves from disk ID to OD.

Abstract: A suspension system comprises a multiple letter flexure, a load beam and an arm. The load beam extends from the tip of the suspension all the way back to the rear of the arm. Datum holes are located in the load beam such that during assembly all reference points are made from the single load beam piece.
