    Abstract: 1488320 Liquid droplet recording apparatus INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 22 Sept 1975 [16 Dec 1974] 38735/75 Heading G4H [Also in Division B6] Liquid droplet recording apparatus comprises means for producing a stream of liquid droplets, means for deflecting a group of droplets by increasing (or decreasing) amounts so that they are directed towards a corresponding group of target locations (1-15, Fig. 3), and selectively operable means for causing additional (or decreased) incremental deflection of individual droplets so that they are directed towards additional target locations (e.g. 81) between the first-mentioned ones. As described, an ink-jet printer prints each character as a 15 x 12 matrix using magnetically deflected ferro-fluid ink. Ink 22 from nozzle 20 is broken up into droplets by means of a magnetic exciter 24 (or alternatively a piezoelectric crystal or a magnetostrictive element) and subjected to a 21-drop-cycle raster deflection by magnet 36. Only drops 1-15 are used, so drops 16-21 (and any drop corresponding to a matrix point where printing is not required) are horizontally deflected by a magnet 30 into a catcher 29. Magnet 30 is also used to impart an incremental horizontal deflection (e.g. points 80, 82) while a magnet 40 is used to impart an incremental vertical deflection (e.g. 81, 82). The control circuit for the windings of magnets 24-36 is shown in Fig. 6. Controls 53, 54 comprise shift registers connected to two drivers for coil 31 of magnet 30 for large and small amplitude pulses (catcher 29 and incremental deflection). Control 55 comprises two shift registers, one acting as a delay since magnet 40 is 10 drops downstream of magnet 30.

The nozzles are spaced plural dot positions from each other corresponding to a plural dot segment of a single dot matrix character stroke. When the row of nozzles is slanted relative to the direction of motion, drops from the nozzles are used to print stroke segments in plural character strokes simultaneously.

    Abstract: In a magnetic ink jet printer a continuous stream of ferrofluid ink drops is projected toward a print medium. A magnetic selector located proximate the stream is operated in synchronism with the flight of the ink drops for deflecting individual unwanted ink drops into a drop catcher. Due to fringing effects produced by the selector when unwanted drops are selected, adjacent print drops are deflected a lesser amount from the initial stream trajectory. Print drops not affected by the fringe magnetic field produced to select unwanted drops are subjected to a compensation deflection depending on their position relative to the unwanted drops so that all print drops follow the same trajectory, after passing the magnetic selector in their travel through a vertical deflector and deposition onto the print medium.
