Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an antenna system with high reliability that can enhance the performance of both up-link and down-link signals in a wireless communication system. SOLUTION: The antenna array system 10 has a 1st array 12 and a 2nd array 14 apart from the 1st array 12. The 1st array 12 is a transmission array for down-link transmission and the combination between the 1st array 12 and the 2nd array 14 forms a diversity configuration for up-link reception. The antenna system 10 has a proper number of antenna elements 31, 32 that are properly spatially arranged to maintain sufficient non-correlation in received signals (received by the 1st array 12 and the 2nd array 14) for coping with high-speed fading while avoiding the lobe definition problem. A signal to interference wave ratio (S/I) in the up-link and the down-link can all be enhanced by employing an adaptive radiation method in both the transmission and reception modes.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stabilize a boring rod on a device which cuts a work piece by applying a cutting chip supported on the boring rod to the surface of the rotating work piece. SOLUTION: This method is proyided with an error sensor 75 which detects the motion of the boring rod 30 in its normal direction (perpendicular to the surface of the work piece 55 at the point where the cutting chip 40 comes into contact with the surface of the work piece 55) and an error sensor 80 which detects the motion of the boring rod 30 in its tangential direction (parallel to the direction of the motion of the surface of the work piece 55 at the contact point). Further, the method is provided with a means which generates a reference signal corresponding to the signal from the error sensor and an adaptive filter which operates corresponding to the signals from the error sensor and reference signal generating means. A generalized force derived from the correction signal outputted by the adaptive filter is applied to the boring rod 30, which is stabilized.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a system for reducing processing resources related to the adaptive algorithm for an antenna array or processing time. SOLUTION: Antenna arrays 10 connected to a radio assembly 17 include a phased array 12 and a diversity array 14 alienated from the array 12. The assembly 17 gives an interface between a radio frequency signal, a microwave frequency signal, or the other electromagnetic signals composed of a signal whose frequency is higher than that of a base band signal and a base band signal whose frequency is lower than those of the electromagnetic signals. The assembly 17 also performs thresholding for providing different transmission signal path and reception signal path and amplifies the transmission signal path and the reception signal path. The assembly 17 is further connected to a signal processing system 15. The system 15 processes the baseband signal and improves the performance of downlink and uplink signals between a mobile station 19 and the assembly 17.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance diversity gain, without lowering data rate by increasing the number of antenna elements for improving S/N of a receiver. SOLUTION: A transmission diversity signal processing method uses an antenna array 23, consisting of a 1st antenna group (>=2 antenna elements) 24-1 and a 2nd antenna group (>=1 antenna elements) 24-2 placed at a distance of about 10 carrier waves set between them and is used for a radio communication system. In this signal processing method, the 1st and 2nd plural representative data streams are produced from signals by using the different orthogonal codes (Walsh codes). The 1st plural representative data streams are encoded (PN code) to shift their phases and then transmitted through the antenna group 24-1 and the 2nd plural representative data streams are encoded (PN code) and transmitted through the antenna group 24-2 respectively.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for stabilizing at least one element of a mechanical system against echo-like responses to mechanical disturbances. One or more error signals are provided by sensing the motion of the system at one or more points. At least one adaptive filter is operated in response to the error signal or signals, and in response to at least one non-advanced reference signal that is directly related to some motion of the system. The adaptive filter produces a corrective signal for driving a mechanical actuator, thereby to apply to the element a stabilizing generalized force. By non-advanced is meant that there is a zero or negative time-delay between the presence of a given signal at the reference-sensing location and the arrival of the same, or a similar, signal at the error-sensing location. In particular embodiments of the invention, the reference-sensing location is the same as the error-sensing location.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method and apparatus for enhancing diversity gain without reducing data rate by increasing the number of antenna elements and configuring the antenna elements for improving signal-te-noise ratio at a receiver. The antenna array comprise a first antenna group with at least two antenna elements and a second antenna group with at least one antenna element. The first and second antenna groups are spaced approximately ten carrier wavelengths or more apart from each other, and the antenna elements belonging to the first antenna group are spaced approximately a half carrier wavelength or less apart from each other. A plurality of data streams is generated from a signal and used to produce a first and second plurality of representative data streams. Each of the first plurality of representative data streams is phase-shifted and encoded using different orthogonal codes, and each of the second plurality of representative data streams is encoded using different orthogonal codes, wherein a different orthogonal code is used to encode representative data streams in the first and second plurality of representative data streams generated from a same data stream, and the first and second plurality of representative data streams allow for the plurality of data streams to be recovered at a receiver after encoding. The encoded and phase shifted first plurality of representative data streams being transmitted over the first antenna group, and the encoded second plurality of representative data streams being transmitted over the second antenna group.

Abstract: A method and system for adaptive signal processing for an antenna array reduces the requisite computations for executing an adaptive algorithm that combines or digitally filters baseband receive signals. The system receives uplink electromagnetic signals from a phased array and uplink electromagnetic signals from a diversity array during the reception of a desired electromagnetic signal transmitted by a desired mobile station. The uplink signals are converted into baseband signals for digital signal processing. The baseband signals are observable as a series of successive time slots. The system determines uplink coarse combining weights associated with the uplink baseband signals of the phased array and downlink coarse combining weights associated with the downlink baseband signals of the phased array. The baseband uplink signals are summed into as few as one resultant baseband signal during or after application of the coarse combining weights to the baseband uplink signals. The system determines fine combining weights for one or more resultant baseband signals and the baseband uplink signals on a symbol-by-symbol basis, or on any durational basis less than a time slot, to combine the signals into a single enhanced baseband signal for symbol detection.
