Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide optical monitoring for optical cross connection fabric. SOLUTION: This optical cross connection (OXC) fabric to be constituted of arrangement of inclinable mirrors, a reflector and plural optical fibers controls positions of mirrors by monitoring optical signals at a position of an optical translation unit corresponding to each of an inputted optical fiber and an outputted optical fiber and thus, optimizes signal transmission between the inputted optical fiber and the outputted optical fiber. The optical translation unit has a function to reproduce the optical signal transmitted in a fiber as well.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a full optical switching which does not increase the number of micromirrors used to implement a switching function and uses an MEMS device. SOLUTION: Using an imaging system, the optical MEMS device is imaged so that in combination with an actual one or more other optical MEMS devices, or images thereof, a single virtual optical MEMS device is formed that has the size of each of the optical MEMS devices combined. The physical size of the arrangement may be reduced by compacting the optical path, e.g. using appropriate conventional mirrors, and/or employing folded arrangements, i.e., arrangements in which there is only one MEMS device stage that does double duty for both input and output through the use of at least one conventional mirror.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide programmable optical multiplexer/demultiplexer. SOLUTION: The programmable optical demultiplexer independently allocates all input optical channels in a WDM optical communication signal and outputs them from a desired output port. The demultiplexer can be operated in an opposite direction. Thus, different wavelengths can be received in multiple input ports and the multilevel wavelength channels are combined in the multiple output ports. Consequently, the programmable optical multiplexer is realized. The programmable multiplexer/demultiplexer have optical constitutions which spatially disperse the optical wavelengths, and they independently give directions to the respective channels by using a tunable micro mirror. Thus, connection between the input port and the output port is decided in a wavelength level by controlling the reflecting direction of a beam.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that an MEMS system mirror array is required which has mirror surfaces each having an effective area smaller than the steering range of the surface in order to perform signal routing, and the MEMS mirror array is necessary which requires a control signal lower than 150 V to position each mirror surface when performing the signal routing. SOLUTION: An optical element 70 to perform routing of a plurality of optical signals between a first port and a second port is provided. The optical element 70 includes a mirror array 75 having a plurality of reflectors. Each optical input signal 72 is sent out by reflectors 82 and 84 in a direction specified by control signals. The optical element 70 includes, moreover, curved mirror planes 82 and 84 which receive optical signals 72" sent out respectively from each reflector, and reflect the optical signals sent out to the first or second port, respectively.

Abstract: An optical MEMS devices is imaged to a different location at which a seco nd optical MEMS device is located in a manner that effectively combines the til t angles of at least one micro mirror of each of the first and second optical devices . The imaging system may reproduce the angle of reflection of the light from the first micro mirror. This may be achieved using a telecentric system, also known as a 4 f system, as the imaging system. Abstract: In an all optical switch an imaging system is interposed between the micro lens array and the moveable micro mirrors of a MEMS device to which, or from whic h, the light beams are directed. This causes an image of the micro lens array to be formed at the MEMS device, or vice-versa, thus effectively eliminating the distance between the micro lens array and the MEMS device. The imaging system may be a telecentri c system. The size of the arrangement may be reduced by compacting the optical path, e.g., using appropriate conventional mirrors, and/or employing folded arrangements, i.e., arrangements in which there is only one MEMS device stage that does double duty for both input and output through the use of at least one conventional mirro r. The overall system is arranged to account for any inversions introduced.
