    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus which enable the development of a simple and inexpensive device for providing the wavelength conversion of an optical communication signal and 3R (re-amplification, re-timing, and re-shaping) optical signal regeneration. SOLUTION: The method and the apparatus for providing optical 3R regeneration include 1) generating an encoded optical clock signal from at least an optical signal, 2) introducing the encoded clock signal into a delay interference section of a regenerator so as to produce an amplitude modulated clock signal, and outputting the amplitude modulated clock signal. The outputted amplitude modulated clock signal preserves information present within the input optical signal.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an all-optical wavelength converter/regenerator which can completely separate an input signal from an output signal. SOLUTION: The delay interference all-optical wavelength converter converts a pulsed input signal Pin at a wavelength λ1 into a wavelength converted signal Pconv at a wavelength λ2 . The wavelength of the input signal and the wavelength of the converted signal may be different from each other or the same. The converter has an input signal coupling unit for receiving the pulsed input signal and supplying it to one input of a modulation section. A carrier signal Pcw is supplied to the other input of the modulation section. The output of the modulation section Pint is supplied to a delay-interference section. The delay- interference part converts the Pint into a primarily amplitude-modulated signal. A wavelength filtering element or device which can achieve partial or complete input-signal wavelength filtering, is either a part of the modulation section, a coupling unit, the delay-interference section or an integral part of the whole configuration.

    Abstract: A delayed interference all-optical wavelength converter is arranged to convert and reshape a pulsed input signal P in at .lambda.1 into the wavelength converted signal P conv at .lambda.2, where .lambda.1 and .lambda .2 are different.
