Abstract: Conversion circuitry (40) for use in a process control system (10) is adapted for coupling to a primary process control loop (26). Digital receiver circuitry (46, 52) in the conversion circuitry (40) receives a digital signal transmitted over the primary process control loop (26) from a field transmitter (22) and responsively provides a digital output. A microprocessor (50) receives the digital output and responsively provides a secondary loop control output. Secondary loop control circuitry (62) for coupling to a secondary process control loop (58) receives the secondary loop control output from the microprocessor (50) and responsively controls current flowing through the secondary process control loop (58). The current flowing through the secondary process control loop (58) is related to the digital signal transmitted by the field transmitter (22).

Abstract: A pressure transmitter has a pressure sensor coupled to an isolator diaphragm by a fill fluid such as oil. According to the invention, means are provided for measuring the position of the isolator diaphragm and comparing the measured position with an expected position to give an indication of fill fluid leakage. Non-contact arrangements such as capacitive and ultrasonic techniques are disclosed for measuring isolator diaphragm position, as well as contacting arrangements such as switches. The fill fluid loss arrangement can be incorporated into a two-wire transmitter, which transmitter can be made to send a warning signal to a control unit when fill fluid loss is detected.

Abstract: A pressure transmitter (10) with a fluid isolator (11) that includes a sensor tube (38) and a fill tube (50) that have "D" shaped ends (40, 54) that connect together in a port (18) internal to the transmitter (10). The shaped ends (40, 54) can be brazed into the port (18) for sealing. Fitting both the sensor tube (38) and the fill tube (50) in the same port provides a low cost isolator with reduced isolator liquid volume. The fluid isolator (11) has an isolator diaphragm (96) with a central diaphragm region (100) overlying a central backing plate (94) that includes an annular groove (111). The annular groove (111) avoids slow response of the isolator (11) after an overpressure condition.

Abstract: An isolator diaphragm is formed and connected to a support member so it will withstand periodic high pressure cleaning. Such periodic cleaning includes use of heated, concentrated cleaning solutions flowing under high pressure from a nozzle which moves rapidly over segments of an exposed surface of the isolator diaphragm. The present invention prevents isolator diaphragm failure precipitated by the substantially incompressible isolator fluid driven toward the perimeter of the diaphragm during cleaning operations. Such cleaning operations generate a separating force between the isolator diaphragm and diaphragm support. The isolator diaphragm has a peripheral wall portion bonded to a planar support surface and is formed to have an offset center region. The peripheral wall and center region are joined by a conical, inclined wall bounding the center portion. The support member has a correspondingly shaped recess with an inclined annular wall that supports the conical wall of the diaphragm. The primary diaphragm flexure point of the center portion of the diaphragm is moved away from the perimeter of the diaphragm, to adjacent the junction of the inclined wall and the center region. The bonding area is not subjected to a high separating force due to the movement in the incompressible fill fluid to a localized region of the diaphragm adjacent a seal or junction line.
