Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a direct smelting method for manufacturing molten metal from a supply material containing metal in a vessel for housing and containing the molten metal having a slag layer. SOLUTION: The interruption operation when there is a need for interrupting metal manufacture and the continuous supply of oxygen-containing gas and carbon-containing solid material is possible include a step of generating heat in a vessel by continuously pouring the oxygen-containing gas and carbon- containing solid material into the vessel and maintaining a molten metal temperature higher than a molten metal solidifying temperature. When there is a need for interrupting the metal manufacture and there is no carbon-containing solid material while there is the continuous supply of the oxygen-containing gas, the interruption operation includes a step of stopping the supply of the metal- containing supply material, pouring the oxygen-containing gas and gas or liquid combustible material into the vessel to generate the heat in the vessel and maintaining the molten metal temperature.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize the loss of melting matter and solid matter accompanying exhaust gas, by providing an exhaust gas duct, which extends from a refining container, with the first section which has a relatively slight upward inclination to the horizontal, and the second section which extends with a relatively slight gradient to the horizontal, in order. SOLUTION: A refining container for directly refining iron ore has a sidewall 5 which forms a roughly cylindrical barrel including an upper barrel section 51 and a lower barrel section 53, upward from the side 56 of a hearth, and is provided with an extended exhaust gas duct 9 outward from its upper section. Moreover, it has a front furnace 57 and a tap hole 61 for discharging the molten metal continuously. In this case, the exhaust gas duct 9 is provided with the first section 31 which inclines upward at an angle α of about, for example, 7 deg. to the horizontal from an inlet end 63, and the second section 33 with a steep gradient which extends vertically from the other end of the first section 31. As a result, this container minimizes the loss of the molten matter and the solid matter which are discharged together with the exhaust gas.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To promote the heat transfer to molten material bath and to minimize the heat loss with a transition zone by spouting molten material into a space on the molten material as splash, droplet and stream, blowing gaseous oxygen and afterburning reaction gas. SOLUTION: Iron ore, solid material containing carbon and flux are blown into molten metallic layer 15 through a lance/tuyere 11. The upward movement of splash, droplet and stream of the molten material is developed, and the stirring in the iron phase and slag layer 16 is developed, and the upward movement of splash, droplet and stream of the molten metal and the slag reaches the upper space of a vessel to form the transition zone 23. A part of molten metal is spouted to a barrel upper part 51 and a roof part 7 passing through the transition zone 23. The gaseous oxygen blown from the lance 13 enters the center range in the transition zone 23 and the reaction gases of CO and H2, are afterburned to develop the high temp. in the gas space, and the temp. of the transition zone 23 reaches about 1,450-1,550 deg.C. The molten iron is continuously discharged through a front furnace hearth 77 and the molten slag is periodically tapped from a tapping hole 61.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for starting a direct smelting method, with which iron is produced from metal-containing supplied material in a metallurgical type vessel having plural raw material spouting lances/tuyeres. SOLUTION: This method is executed with the following steps, i.e., (a) the vessel is preheated and (b) the molten iron in a vessel 77 is supplied to form the molten material. Further, (c) carboneceous material and flux are supplied into the molten material and oxygen-containing gas is spouted through the lances/tuyeres 11 and gas generated from the carbon, and the molten material is burnt to heat the molten material and slag is produced. Furthermore, (d) while continuing the supply of the carboneceous material and the flux and the spouting of the oxygen-containing gas, the metal-containing material is supplied into the vessel and the metal-containing material is smelted to produce the molten iron.

Abstract: A vessel which produces metal from a metalliferous feed material by a direct smelting process is disclosed. The vessel contains a molten bath having a metal layer (15) and a slag layer (16) on the metal layer and has a gas continuous space (31) above the slag layer. The vessel includes a hearth formed of refractory material having a base (3) and sides (55) in contact with the molten metal and side walls (5) which extend upwardly from the sides (55) of the hearth and are in contact with the slag layer and the gas continuous space. The side walls that contact the gas continuous space include water cooled panels (57) and a layer of slag on the panels. The vessel also includes one or more than one lance/tuyere (13) extending downwardly into the vessel and injecting an oxygen-containing gas into the vessel above the metal layer and a plurality of lances/tuyeres (11) injecting at least part of the metalliferous feed material and a carbonaceous material with a carrier gas into the molten bath so as to penetrate the metal layer.

Abstract: A direct smelting process for producing metals from a metalliferous feed material is disclosed. The process includes forming a molten bath having a metal layer (15) and a slag layer (16) on the metal layer in a metallurgical vessel, injecting metalliferous feed material and solid carbonaceous material into the metal layer via a plurality of lances/tuyeres (11), and smelting metalliferous material to metal in the metal layer. The process also includes causing molten material to be projected as splashes, droplets, and streams into a top space above a nominal quiescent surface of the molten bath to form a transition zone (23). The process also includes injecting an oxygen-containing gas into the vessel via one or more than one lance/tuyere (13) to post-combust reaction gases released from the molten bath, whereby the ascending and thereafter descending splashes, droplets and streams of molten material in the transition zone facilitate heat transfer to the molten bath, and whereby the transition zone minimises heat loss from the vessel via the side walls in contact with the transition zone. The process is characterised by controlling the process by maintaining a high slag inventory.

Abstract: A molten-bath based direct smelting process and apparatus for producing metals from a ferrous material is disclosed. The process includes injecting feed materials being solid material and carrier gas into a molten bath at a velocity of at least 40m/s through at least one downwardly extending solids injection lance having a delivery tube of internal diameter of 40-200mm that is located so that a central axis of an outlet end of the lance is at an angle of 20 to 90 degrees to a horizontal axis. The feed materials injection generates a superficial gas flow of at least 0.04 Nm3/s/m2 within the molten bath at least in part by reactions of injected material in the bath. The gas flow causes molten material to be projected upwardly as splashes, droplets and streams and form an expanded molten bath zone, with the gas flow and the upwardly projected molten material causing substantial movement of material within the molten bath and strong mixing of the molten bath. The feed materials are selected so that, in an overall sense, the reactions of the feed materials in the molten bath are endothermic. The process also includes injecting an oxygen-containing gas into an upper region of the vessel via at least one oxygen gas injection lance and post-combusting combustible gases released from the molten bath.
