Abstract: 1,2,5-thiadiazole-3,4-dicarboxylic acid is said to be of use as a resin-curing agent, e.g. for epoxy resins. Specifications 928,572 and 928,573 are referred to.ALSO:The invention comprises salts (other than alkaline earth metal salts) of 1,2,5-thiadiazole-3,4-dicarboxylic acid; a process for the production of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of 1,2,5-thiadiazole-3,4-dicarboxylic acid by reacting 4-nitro-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal permanganate at an initial pH of at least 6; and a process as above in which the resulting reaction mixture is made strongly acid to form the free acid, a water-soluble salt of a heavy metal that forms an insoluble salt with 1,2,5-thiadiazole-3,4-dicarboxylic acid, e.g. AgNO3, is added to precipitate that salt, and the latter is converted to the free acid by treatment with an acid such as HCl, HBr or HI or H2S. The free 1,2,5-thiadiazole 3,4-dicarboxylic acid may be treated with a base to form a mono- or di-salt thereof. Specified metals are alkali metals such as Na and K, alkaline earth metals such as Ba and Ca and heavy metals; ammonium salts may also be prepared. Specifications 928,572 and 928,573 are referred to.

Abstract: A method to increase the efficiency of transduction of hematopoietic and other cells by retroviruses includes infecting the cells in the presence of fibronectin or fibronectin fragments. The fibronectin and fibronectin fragments significantly enhance retroviral-mediated gene transfer into the cells, particularly hematopoietic cells including committed progenitors and primitive hematopoietic stem cells. The invention also provides improved methods for somatic gene therapy capitalizing on enhanced gene transfer, hematopoietic cellular populations, and novel constructs for enhancing retroviral-mediated DNA transfer into cells and their use.

Abstract: The present invention provides methods for the manipulation of cell differentiation comprising contacting a cell with an amount of a toporythmic protein, or with a fragment or derivative of a first toporythmic protein which fragment or derivative being able to bind to a second toporythmic protein, or with an amount of an antibody or fragment thereof containing the idiotype thereof which binds to a toporythmic protein, said toporythmic protein being effective to manipulate the differentiation of the contacted cell.

Abstract: LA PRESENTE INVENCION PROPORCIONA UN FRAGMENTO PRACTICAMENTE PURIFICADO DE UNA PROTEINA SERRATE, QUE SE CARACTERIZA POR SU CAPACIDAD DE UNIRSE IN VITRO, CUANDO SE EXPRESA SOBRE LA SUPERFICIE DE UNA PRIMERA CELULA, A UNA PROTEINA NOTCH, EXPRESADA SOBRE LA SUPERFICIE DE UNA SEGUNDA CELULA. SE DESCRIBEN ASIMISMO DERIVADOS Y ANALOGOS DE DICHO FRAGMENTO, CAPACES DE UNIRSE A UNA SEGUNDA PROTEINA SELECCIONADA A PARTIR DEL GRUPO QUE COMPRENDE PROTEINAS DE TIPO NOTCH, DELTA Y SERRATE. SE PRESENTAN TAMBIEN UNA SECUENCIA DE ACIDO NUCLEICO QUE CODIFICA PARA DICHA PROTEINA, ASI COMO VECTORES Y CELULAS RECOMBINANTES QUE LA CONTIENEN. POR ULTIMO, SE INCLUYE UN PROCEDIMIENTO DE PRODUCCION DE UN FRAGMENTO DE UNA PROTEINA SERRATE.

Abstract: The present invention relates to nucleotide sequences of the human Notch and Delta genes, and amino acid sequences of their encoded proteins, as well as fragments thereof containing an antigenic determinant or which are functionally active. The invention is also directed to fragments (termed herein "adhesive fragments"), and the sequence thereof, of the proteins ("toporythmic proteins") encoded by toporythmic genes which mediate homotypic or heterotypic binding to toporythmic proteins. Toporythmic genes, as used herein, refers to the genes Notch, Delta, and Serrate, as well as other members of the Delta/Serrate family which may be identified, e.g., by the methods described herein. Analogs and derivatives of the adhesive fragments which retain binding activity are also provided. Antibodies to human Notch and to adhesive fragments are additionally provided. In specific embodiments, the adhesive fragment of Notch is that fragment comprising the Notch sequence most homologous to Drosophila Notch EGF-like repeats 11 and 12; the adhesive fragment of Delta mediating heterotypic binding is that fragment comprising the sequence most homologous to Drosohila Delta amino acids 1-230; the adhesive fragment of Delta mediating homotypic binding is that fragment comprising the sequence most homologous to Drosophila Delta amino acids 32-230; and the adhesive fragment of Serrate is that fragment comprising the sequence most homologous to Drosophila Serrate amino acides 85-283.

Abstract: A chew product useful against the build-up of dental calculus on the teeth o f animals contains an amount of sodium hexametaphosphate effective to reduce t he development of dental calculus. The chew product in one embodiment is prepar ed by soaking the product in an aqueous solution containing from about 0.5 % to about 3.0 % by weight sodium hexametaphosphate. Also disclosed are methods f or preparing the novel chew product and for using the chew product containing sodium hexametaphosphate to reduce and/or prevent the build-up of dental calculus on the teeth of animals.
