Abstract: A process for the catalytic gas-phase oxidation of propene to acrylic acid, in which the reaction gas starting mixture is oxidized, with an increased propene loading, in a first reaction stage, over a first fixed-bed catalyst and then the acrolein-containing product gas mixture of the first reaction stage is oxidized, in a second reaction stage, with an increased acrolein loading, over a second fixed-bed catalyst, the catalyst moldings in both reaction stages having an annular geometry.

Abstract: Production of acrolein or acrylic acid by gas-phase oxidation of propene comprises passing a mixture of propene, oxygen and inert gas (including at least 20 vol.% nitrogen) through a first fixed bed of catalyst at a temperature (T1) of 300-330 deg C and then through a second fixed bed of catalyst at a temperature (T2) of 300-365 deg C, where T2 is at least 5 deg C above T1. The molar ratio of oxygen to propene is at least 1:1. The catalyst is a mixed metal oxide comprising (i) molybdenum and/or tungsten and (ii) bismuth, tellurium, antimony, tin and/or copper. The propene supply rate is at least 160 Nl per liter of catalyst per hour. The single-pass propene conversion is at least 90%, with at least 90% selectivity for acrolein plus acrylic acid. The propene conversion in the first bed is 40-80%.
