Abstract: Mixtures of isomeric decyl alcohols are prepared by hydroformylation of mixtures containing but-1-ene and but-2-ene in two stages to give aldehyde mixtures, condensation of the aldehyde mixtures which are separated off and combined with formation of an aldol mixture and separation and hydrogenation of the aldol mixture. The first stage of the hydroformylation is carried out in the presence of rhodium catalysts dissolved in water, the second stage in the presence of cobalt catalysts homogeneously dissolved in the reaction medium. The mixture of isomeric decyl alcohols affords, esterified with phthalic acid, a mixture of isomeric decyl phthalates, which are used as plasticisers.

Abstract: Mixtures of isomeric pentanoic acids are prepared by hydroformylation of 1-butene/2-butene mixtures to give aldehyde mixtures, and oxidation of the aldehyde mixtures which have been separated off. The hydroformylation is carried out in the presence of rhodium catalysts, which are dissolved in water. The mixture of isomeric C5-mono-carboxylic acids, when esterified with dihydric or polyhydric alcohols, gives a mixture of isomeric esters which are used as lubricant for refrigerant compressors operated with chlorine-free, partly fluorinated hydrocarbons as the refrigerant.

Abstract: Mixtures for isomeric nonanols and decanols are obtained by concomitant aldol condensation of n-butanal and pentanals (mixtures of 60 to 90% by weight of n-pentanal, 10 to 40% by weight of 2-methylbutanal and up to 1% by weight of 3-methylbutanal), hydrogenation of the aldol condensation product to give the saturated alcohols, and removal from the reaction mixture of those components whose boiling points are lower than those of the nonanols and decanols. The alcohol mixture is outstandingly suitable for the preparation of ester plasticisers.
